Katla, with Vík nestled just below is a breathtaking view when seen from
the air, in this photo taken from
the South. Katla, the errant troll
of volcanos, is situated in the
southeast of Mýrdalsjökull with
Eyjafjallajökull to the east and
almost directly to the north from
there is Hekla another volcano
that has recently become more
of a concern than Katla. The
Icelanders living with lava will
carry on their daily lives and
deal with any situation as it
arises.
Vík is a picturesque village
with a nearby beautiful black
beach with the Reynisdrangar,
black basalt columns sculpted
by the sea seen clearly in the
lower left of the photograph. A
folk tale says that these columns
are former trolls, which were
caught outside at dawn. The
sea around them is rather wild
and stormy, so travellers will

not be surprised to discover
a monument to the memory
of drowned seamen on the
beach. The beach itself is the
smoothest fine black sand that
simply shakes off your feet
when it dries. Strikingly clean
and free of debris, this beach
stretches for miles.
You can take a tour on sea
to visit the amazing Dyrhólaey,
which is further to the west of
the area shown here. The tour
takes off from Dyrhólar and
goes down the sands and to the
east along the beach, where
the opening in Dyrhólaey and
the rock pillars off the coast
are clearly visible. The area
abounds with the quirky little
creatures called puffins or
lundar as they are known in
Icelandic.

Seal tightly and put the quart sealer into a large pot. Add water to cover the
top of the jar with 1/2 inch of water. When the water boils, set a timer for 4
hours. Make sure lids are always under water.
If you wish the pike to have the appearance of salmon, put ketchup in the
sealer.
Pack Freshwater Fish northern pike in a quart sealer. Add:
1 heaping tsp salt
