Kjartan Kárason
Kjartan has been a volunteer
at Icelandic Camp since he was
16-years-old and he also been
a helper at the Snorri program
from a young age, since he is the
grandson of Almar Grímsson,
former head of the Icelandic
National League in Iceland.
In 2011, Kjartan visited from
Iceland and was immediately
fascinated with New Iceland,
especially Gimli. He was born in
the United States, but was raised
in the cold climate of Reykjavík,
Iceland. This will be his second
time around as he is travelling
with Hafdís through Canada
on his summer holidays. He
is looking forward to teaching
children about the language and
culture of Iceland.

The Icelandic Association of Washington, DC hosted its annual
June 17th celebration at the
residence of the Icelandic
Ambassador to the United
States.
Newly-elected president
of the association, Dísa
Guðjónsdóttir Schultz,
Ambassador Geir Haarde,
and his wife Inga Jóna
Þórðardóttir, welcomed guests
followed by a lavish table of
pönnukökur, cakes, vínarterta,
and open-faced sandwiches
(snittubrauð) with salmon and
hangikjöt provided by some
very talented association
members. Icelandic hot dogs
with all the trimmings were
especially popular with the
younger visitors.
Special guests to the
celebration were members of
the Icelandic band Low Roar
who are currently on their
North American concert tour.

Chief Executive Officer Brad Hirst says this “is the single
most important initiative that introduces young people aged 5-18
to their Icelandic heritage while being around people their own
age. This year we are adding two days to the camp at no extra
charge to the camper. We have so much to offer this year and all
the info you can ask for is readily available at www.icelandiccamp.
com.” Please feel free to contact Brad Hirst at 204-485-5455 or at
icelandiccamp@gmail.com. We hope to get over 35 campers this
year and the only way to do that is to get clubs and people such as
yourselves to spread the word about camp and support children in
getting to camp. If you are interested in helping out the camp in
any way please call Brad.
Hafdís Martinsdóttir
Hafdís Martinsdóttir is a
newcomer at Icelandic camp.
She was born in Sweden and
raised in Garðabær, Iceland.
Even though this will be her
first time in Gimli, Hafdís has
a rooted connection to New
Iceland, since her grandfather
Sigurður Sigurgeirsson was
head of the Icelandic National
League in Iceland. Hafdís owns
two Icelandic sheepdogs, loves
horses, and enjoys spending
her evenings soaking in the
thermal pools of Reykjavík.
She is looking forward to
experiencing New Iceland and
teaching people about the Old.
