Greetings from Gordon J. Reykdal Honorary Consul of the Republic of Iceland Suite #205 10230 142 Street Edmonton, Alberta T5N 3Y6 Cell: 780.497.1480 E-mail: gjreykdal@gmail.com L-H Inc. holds AGM and open house On Sunday, June, 7, 2015 the board of directors and members of Lögberg-Heimskringla gathered for the annual general meeting, which was held in the newspaper’s new premises on the 5th floor of the Sterling Building at 283 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. Those directors who live outside of Manitoba joined the meeting by teleconference. President Peter Johnson reported on the events of the past year. The board was pleased to appoint Stefan Jonasson as its new editor as of January 1, 2015. Unexpectedly, the L-H offices on the ground floor of the Sterling Building were no longer available, but after some searching, the newspaper was able to secure affordable new office space on the 5th floor of the same building. The move upstairs was completed by the staff and volunteers. Peter informed the meeting that a number of directors were leaving the board for a variety of reasons: Grant Stefanson, Elva Jonasson, Brian Tomasson and Garry Oddleifson. He thanked them for their many years of service and also acknowledged two former members who retired at the previous annual meeting: Vi Bjarnason Hilton and Lyle Hillman. Peter announced that the board will be striking a committee to review its practices for recruiting and nominating prospective board members in order to ensure good regional representation and the acquisition of individuals with a variety of experiences and interests. Peter asked for nominations from the floor and Gunnvör Daníelsdóttir Ásmundsson was nominated and elected to the board. Gunnvör will be a great addition to our board with her experience working at the Icelandic Consulate in Winnipeg and her connections with the community in Gimli and Iceland. After the meeting, the guests to our open house – who included Ambassador Hjálmar Hannesson and his wife Anna Birgis, Linda Sigurdson Collette (the 2015 Fjallkona for the Icelandic Festival), her mother Helga Sigurdson (the Fjallkona for 1988), Carol and Brian Darragh, Linda Hammersley, and Gunnthora Gísladóttir – toured the new premises and enjoyed refreshments. Alicyn Goodman Winnipeg, MB The Icelandic Baldur, the summer god, must have been at the ambassador’s beautiful home in Ottawa on June 17, as it was a lovely summer day. Attending were many members of the diplomatic corps in Ottawa and members of Friends of Iceland, who were treated to Icelandic delicacies, such as lamb, shrimp with mango, and Icelandic Glacial water. And for sweets there were “puffin eggs” – not real ones of course, but made of chocolate with a white coating. This annual event was graciously hosted by the ambassador and his charming wife, who wore a stunning necklace of Icelandic lava – most suitable for our national day.
