20 C. THE BLÓMLENDI FORMATION. Obs. 1—3 were made on the slope from Hásteinn west to Kaplagjóta at h. ca. 50 m, above sea level, on July lOth 1933. H. 20 cm, Area 1—10 m2. (Table 7 A and B). As mentioned on p. 7 this formation lies on steep slopes in the sun where the soil is in many places gravelly and loose, very dependent on the atmosphere for heat and moisture from day to day, but yet covered with a con- tinuous carpet of moss. The characteristic plants of the formation are Plantago lanceolata L. and Succisa pratensis Moench and these two plants grow nowhere else in the is- lands and elsewhere in the country are only found in the south, in ”Rangárvallasýsla” and ”V-Skaftafellssýsla”, where the conditions of growth are similar and the sunny position. Other characteristic plants are Galium verum L., Achillea millefolium L., Thymus serpyllum L. var prostrata Hornem., Festuca rubra L., Anthoxanthum odoratum L., Agrostis canina L., and Erigeron borealis (Vierh.) Simm. The vegetation is very luxuriant. The no. of species is 54. The biological spectrum shows a very low A % 17,8 with a low Ch % only 11,0. The high E 1 % figure 24,2 is also noticeable. Here the E 1 % reaches its highest in the West- mann Islands and this can best be explained by the sunny position and the shelter which the slopes afford to the vegetation. D. THE ANGELICA CLUSTERS, THE PUFFIN COLONY, THE DRY MEADOW, AND THE CULTI- VATED MEADOW LAND. Obs. 1, on angelica clusters was made on ”Hvannhilla” in ”Bjarnarey” on July 8th, 1933, h. above sea-level, ca. 10 m, H 1 m, F 1—10 m2. Obs. 2—3, on puffin colony, were made (2) on Bjarnarey on July 6th, 1933, h. above sea- level ca. 150 m, (3) on ”Litli Höfði”, Heimaey, on July
