the number of species is about twice as great yet the pro-
portion between the number and the area covered by the
plant formation is very similar; Cultivated meadow land
0,6, Dry meadow land 0,6, Puffin colony 0,7 and Angelica
clusters 0,7; but more about this below.

VI. CONCLUDING REMARKS.
On considering table 9 we see how the number of species
increases from 5,0, in the sand to 41,0 in the blómlendi,
as the outer conditions improve, but after reaching the
maximum the number of species again decreases over the
cultivated meadow-land, and the bird-colony, with the im-
proving conditions there, until it reaches 7,5 in the angel-
ica-clusters. We have therefore at both ends of the scale
the most specialised plant formation, no. 1 the reclaimed
sand with Atriplex hastatum L., Honckenya peploides (L.),
Ehrh., and Cacile maritima, Scop. var. latifolia Desf., and
