28 this soil, cf. p. 9, Vegetable gardens. Solanum tuberosum L. is indeed a Geophyte but when cultivated it is treated as a Therophyte, as the tubers are sown in the spring. We see from table 9, p. 36 how the index rises, from the sand, where it is 0,2, up to 0,6 in the cultivated meadow land and 0,7 in the bird colony. I do not intend to expatiate on the significance of this index for cultivation, but I think that it may be useful both generally and also with regard to special species or life- forms when choosing areas for cultivation. Iceland has a peculiar position in this respect, being for the greater part an uncultivated country.
