A T L A N T I C A 9 airmail FROM HERE AND THERE IL LU S TR A TI O N S TE IN G R ÍM U R E Y FJ Ö R Ð Regardless of your sex, you’ve probably heard the commercial jingle: for longer and fuller lashes try Maybelline Mascara. Okay, what the heck does a person need with longer and fuller lashes any- way? And what’s up with the millions of dollars spent on mascara and other assorted facial make-up? The Mexican poet Octavio Paz hit the nail with the sweet spot of the ham- mer when he said we are frightened by other people’s glances because the body reveals rather than hides our private selves. In other words, we need those masks of make-up to conceal the secret intimacies (blemishes) we’re reluctant to reveal. Yes, I’ll admit, looking sexy is another key factor. So you think that discussing the words of a Nobel Laureate is too much for a short ditty on mascara? Perhaps. Then again, flip through the pages of the Oxford English Dictionary and look up mascara. “A cosmetic for dark- ening and thickening the eyelashes.” Duh, look closer. “Origin, late 19th century from Italian, literally ‘mask’, from Arabic ‘maskara’.” Maybe Paz is onto something. EW It’s no longer just a video game. Filming began last summer to transform Tomb Raider from the computer screen to the silver screen, and one of the main locations for the soon-to-be hit movie – starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie – was Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, south Iceland. Imagine the luscious Angelina Jolie dressed in a tight T-shirt and skin-lick’n pants embodying the role of the female archaeol- ogist Lara Croft. That’ll fill the theatre. Now visualise Mrs Jolie standing next to the floating icebergs that cool Jökulsárlón, the glacial lagoon. Er, that’ll give ‘em a rise for their money. To create the reality for the film, an elaborate set was erected in September around Jökulsárlón, a location site for more than a few Hollywood pictures, including part of the James Bond film, A View to a Kill. About 100 Icelanders were hired for the local production. Filming lasted for close to a week, then the Hollywood players moved on to locations within the UK.
