For an intimate view of life in Scotland’s second city, try Ashton Lane – a small slice of southern Europe located in the Hillhead dis-
trict, up from Glasgow University. The narrow, cobbled street that makes up Ashton Lane has lights hanging from wires overhead;
there’s a small movie theatre, quaint restaurants and pubs where the beer flows thick. Sitting at the end of this small village-of-a-

levels buzzed the night I visited – a
young couple had just won a case of
Miller Genuine Draft, in Dr Paul’s
Monday Night Comedy Quiz for
answering, as they joked, “rubbish
questions”.
The Cul de Sac seemed to capture the
essence of Glasgow. And Louise, a
tourist from Livingston, summed up
the city and why she visits so often. “I
love the atmosphere of Glasgow,” she
said, as the bartender called for last
orders. “It’s not pretentious, It’s young,
trendy arty. And the people – they’re
so friendly.” EW
