they were among the eight founders of
the Tomato design studio which has
swept up armfuls of awards in recent
years for its advertisements, documen-
taries, installations, sound design,
typography and title sequences for
films like Trainspotting, to name just
one. Tomato now has branches in New
York, Tokyo and Sydney, in addition to
its original Soho office where our inter-
view took place. Hang on, what has all
this got to do with a travel article about
Soho? Well, you see, on this occasion I
got a glimpse into what it’s like to work
and socialise in the district. After the
interview, Hyde suggested we go for a
pint at one of the Tomato team’s locals.
We set off and walked straight into a
man with more gold than enamel on
his teeth, who greeted the Underworld
singer with open arms. Here was no
less a personage than Goldie, one of
the hotter DJs of the city’s under-
ground drum & bass scene, though not
yet the international superstar he was
to become shortly afterwards with the
release of the revolutionary master-
piece Timeless.
Afterwards we stood out on the
pavement in front of the pub, pint in
