Travellers landing in Iceland are in for a pleasant sur-
prise. From 25 March, a new wing of Leifur Eiríksson
terminal will be open, offering increased comfort and
convenience for passengers entering Iceland or those waiting
in transit.
The new, 17,000 m2 building, expected to cost USD 45 mil-
lion, will contain 14 passport stations, thus increasing the
efficiency of immigration and passport control for both
Schengen passengers – those travelling from member
countries of the EEA, excluding the UK and Ireland – and non-
Schengen countries, such as the US and Canada.
Now, Schengen passengers landing in Iceland won’t need
to worry about passport control. Also, there’s an agreement
which states that after passengers enter a Schengen country
and clear immigration they will no longer need to show their
passports. This means that once an American en route to
Copenhagen presents his passport in Iceland, he won’t need
to go through passport control in Copenhagen.
“The new facility will allow for rapid immigration control,”
says Höskuldur Ásgeirsson, managing director of the newly
established company, Flugstöd Leifs Eiríkssonar (Airport
Terminal). “It’s much more convenient to go through immi-
gration in a small airport, compared to the larger airports in
Europe.”
Always striving to improve amenities for travellers, the
company running Leifur Eiríksson terminal is prepared for
the full expansion of the terminal by the beginning of 2002.
Once completed, the facility will provide travellers with pre-
boarding lounges, more shops, food services, and more
space to sit back and relax. EW
