PHOTO PÁLL STEFÁNSSON Here in the northern hemisphere, people are not the only creatures heading south for Florida during the darkest winter months. Many bird species do this as well. But if you’re lucky enough to be a pelican, you don’t have far to go. These heat-seeking birds don’t tolerate the cold and frost, and since they’re non-migratory, they spend their entire l ives (which can be as long as 30 years) within a 25-mile radius area. Imagine a pelican’s l ife: soaking up the year-round sunrays and feasting on fish and worms. Icelandair f l ies two to three times a week between Europe and Orlando, central ly located on the Florida peninsula. From here you only need to travel a short distance to al l the attractions. You can meet Mickey Mouse in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom or cross to St. Petersburg on the western coast, by the Gulf of Mexico, where this picture was taken.
