Living it up in London
POSH SPICE, TOOTHLESS, DRUNKEN BUMS AND MIDDLE CLASS MARY ALL
LIVE IN PERFECT HARMONY IN THE CITY OF 12 MILLION, LONDON. AÓJ
EAST ENDERS
In the east of London, visitors can relive the adventures of
Oliver Twist or drink beer at the Ten Bells Public House on
Commercial Street, the very same pub as three of the victims
of Jack the Ripper are reputed to have frequented. The Bethnal
Green Museum of Childhood is a popular stop, where you will
find the oldest nappy in public keeping, which dates
from the 17th century.
Ten Bells Public House, 84 Commercial St, Open 11.00-23.00
Mon-Sat and from 12.00-15.00 and then 19.00-22.30 on Sun.
Museum of Childhood, Cambridge Heath Road, tel: (+44) 20 8983
5200. Open 10.00-17.50. Closed Fridays. Free admission.
BRIC-A-BRAC ON BRICK LANE
This buzzing marketplace, off Bethnal Green Road, is where
you’ll find a used leather jacket, cheap jewellery, second-hand
stuff, furniture, footwear, fruit and vegetables and lots of junk.
Brick Lane is also a good place to find a good curry restaurant
which allows guests to bring their own beer or wine.
Brick Lane St. Open on Sundays from 6.00 in the morning until
about 14.00.
COCKNEY RABBIT SLANG
In cockney London, you can also practice your cockney rabbit
rhyming slang. East London is the only place where you can go
to the rub-a-dub-dub (pub) to have a kitchen sink (drink), or a
kick and prance (dance). And we’re not telling porky pies (lies)
when we say that your trouble and strife (wife) will not be all too
happy if you drink too much plink-plonk (vin blanc) and spill on
your dinky doos (shoes) on the way home in the jam jar (car).
WEST ENDERS
In the west end, you can shop till you drop on Oxford Street,
go clubbing or wining and fine dining in Soho, see the sights
on Trafalgar Square, see a show at a theatre on Shaftsbury
Avenue, or buy a book on Charing Cross.
TIME OUT
The Agua spa at the
Sanderson Hotel near
Bond Street will make
your insides all warm and
tingly and your outsides
healthy and refreshed. The
one and only Madonna
even described the spa as
one of the “most beauti-
ful” she has ever seen. So
if you feel like pampering
yourself and soaking in your thoughts, far away from the lights
and loudness of the city, the Agua spa makes a good hiding
place.
