54 A T L A N T I C A Arne Jacobsen Reykjavík Art Museum — Kjarvalsstadir 14 September - 17 November An exhibition on the designs of Arne Jacobsen, one of the most talented Danish architects of the 20th century, will be held at the Reykjavík Art Museum – Kjarvalsstadir from 14 September - 17 November. This year Jacobsen would have been celebrating his 100th birthday, and in honour of the artist’s contribution to the world of design, many museums have been putting up extensive exhibitions of his work. This is the first time that such a comprehensive display of Jacobsen’s art has been held in Iceland, with items such as tableware, furniture, lights and textiles on show. Jacobsen became one of the leading figures in a Scandinavian movement that has left its mark on contemporary design and architecture. He is best known internationally for his fur- niture and industrial design, and took part in creating the white modernism of 1920s furniture design, as well as the international style in architectural design. Jacobsen was also one of the most productive artists of the 20th century, producing a staggering 350 works of art dur- ing his lifetime. The exhibition at Kjarvalsstadir is held in co-operation with the Danish Embassy in Iceland, the furniture store Epal and the foreign producers of Arne Jacobsen designs. AÓJ ÁRBÆJARSAFN Árbæjarsafn Folk Museum is the largest open-air museum in Iceland. It is a nostalgic reminder of the traditional Iceland that has been left in the shadow of the modern day. The museum is made up of around 30 buildings which were mostly transported from downtown Reykjavík and date from the period 1820-1920. This autumn the muse- um will be offering tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, beginning at 1 PM. Group bookings can also be made for special tours around the museum. The library offers a variety of newspapers and maga- zines in eight languages. There you will also find books on Iceland in many languages, a children’s play area, a CD music collection and access to the Internet. After checking the bulletin board for what’s on and where, you can relax in the coffee shop on the first floor before heading off to your next destination.
