EARTH TO GUSGUS
Gusgus first scampered on to the international music scene as a raggle-
taggle gang of creative types, pulling together to offer a little more than
your average band. Since then, they’ve downsized and many would
agree that the new quartet is a tighter team with a lighter heart. Their
tongues places firmly in their cheeks, gusgus offset their dance floor con-
quering tracks with some fun-loving funk and fancy dress. What’s more,
they’ve ditched their civilian names for some more colourful titles:
President Bongo, Biggi Veira, Buckmaster and latest addition, Earth. Also
known as Urdur Hákonardóttir, Earth’s vibrant vocals are unlike anything
else been punted in the electronic genre, and so it seems appropriate
that she comment for the crew…
What is gusgus all about these days?
These days gusgus is mostly about making music and about the four of
us having fun together and working our way through and around our
ideas – whatever they may be… Since our new album Attention was
released, every day has been a new adventure.
Do you think that the band reflects Iceland in any way?
Sure, it’s unavoidable given the great forces we’re raised in. Step out of
your house and you can almost touch a mountaintop with your finger, if
the wind doesn’t just blow you there! Icelandic nature is bound to influ-
ence everyone surrounded by it.
How do you feel when you're singing?
I don’t know if I can describe it really. Basically it feels like releasing some
feeling that you can’t hold in there much longer – like if I don’t sing when
I really feel like it, I feel like I might burst. It’s a very good healing process,
and it makes me feel like a natural woman.
