COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen’s new opera house will
be inaugurated with a gala perfor-
mance on 15 January. Donated to
the city by ship-mogul A.P. Møller,
the new opera house, home of the
Royal Danish Opera, is one of the
most advanced in the world.
The inside of the immaculate opera
house will be decorated by vari-
ous artists, including internationally
acclaimed Danish-Icelandic artist
Olafur Eliasson, famous for his
“Weather Project” at the Tate
Modern in London.
For more information
on the Opera house, log on to

FRANKFURT
Römerberg square is at the centre
of Frankfurt’s old town. Despite the
old, timbered houses enclosing the
square, Römerberg is deceptively
new. Destroyed in Allied bombing
raids in March 1944, restoration
of the historic square began in the
1980s to what is today the main
stop on the visitor’s trail, where
tourists can hang out with the
locals and drink apple wine.
WASHINGTON D.C.
Built to model an Egyptian
obelisk, construction on the
Washington Monument began in
1848 and wasn’t completed until
1884, nearly 30 years after the
death of the architect Robert
Mills. The reason for the delay:
a lack of funds, and the Civil War.
