Icelanders go to the cinema an average of 5.5
times per year, putting them on par with the
movie-mad United States. It may be a love affair
with popcorn rather than celluloid that attracts
Icelanders to the movies. (Anyone who’s ever sat
through an Icelandic intermission will under-
stand.) Regardless, the high attendance means
that there are seven theaters in town, despite
Reykjavík’s small size.
The best theater to watch that latest Hollywood
Blockbuster is the plush Smárabíó, located in
the Smáralind mall. For those interested in edgy
cinema, or artsy-fartsy movies, Háskólabíó and
Regnboginn routinely screen festivals films. For
