AN OUTLINE OF THE
PROPOSED CHANGES
• By 2007, when changes should be complete, the
North Building will have increased from 22,000 m2
to 38,500 m2 in size.
• The check-in and arrivals area have been expand-
ed already, office space has been moved from the
second to the third floor, a duty-free warehouse
has been built, and changes have been made to
car parking areas.
• Security scanning will be moved up to the sec-
ond floor in April 2006.
• The two duty-free stores and coffee bar that have
always been in the Schengen building will remain.
• A partition has been built on the ground floor
to separate the area under development from the
rest.
• Kaffitár coffee shop, Íslandica, the Blue Lagoon,
and Fríhöfnin sport, which were in the western part
of the departures lounge, have all moved.
• The Íslandica duty-free store, which was in the
North Building, is now situated opposite passport
control at the entrance point to the Schengen
Building.
• Newspapers and magazines are no longer part
of Íslandica and are now in a store devoted exclu-
sively to them, called Eymundsson, opposite the
new location of Íslandica.
• Kaffitár and the Blue Lagoon are now side-by-
side on the second floor, next to the Duty Free
Store, in the premises that previously housed
Memories of Iceland.
• Memories of Iceland is now in the Schengen
Building, adjacent to Eymundsson.
• Fríhöfnin sports store will very soon open in front
of the partition, opposite the Duty Free Store, not
far from where it has always been.
• Landsbanki Íslands, the bank at the airport, will
remain where it is until fall 2006, when work starts
in that area of the building.
• When the expansion of the terminal is complete,
the area assigned to stores and services on the
second floor will be double what it is now, and
the whole floor will be devoted to merchandise,
cafeterias and passenger services.
• Ten to 12 new stores will open, the first in spring
2006 and the rest during the following year. In
some cases, contracts have already been signed,
but the names of the new stores are not being
disclosed.
• Arctic Café, which was in the smoking area, has
moved into the old Saga Lounge.
• There will be no additional changes during the
peak holiday period in 2006 as changes to the
western side of the second floor will be complete
and alterations to the eastern side will not begin
until fall 2006.
• When the changes are complete, the baggage
reclaim area will be able to deal with 30 planes
at once.

It seems like only yesterday that the Leifur Eiríksson Air Terminal at Keflavík was enlarged to
take account of changes incurred by Schengen regulations, but now the airport terminal is going
to be expanded again, due to the huge passenger numbers forecast for the coming years. While
it is estimated that 1.8 million passengers will have passed through the airport at year-end 2005,
the projected figure for 2015 is 3.2 million.
The Schengen Building, from which planes to the UK, USA and other non-Schengen countries
depart, will not be subject to further expansion, but the main terminal building, called the North
Building, is being expanded. The entrance to the Duty Free area and departure hall has already
been changed on a temporary basis, and is now to the right of the check-in desks.
