WATER
It surrounds Iceland and pervades it as well. Homes are heated with geothermal H2O piped up from
2,000m below the surface of the earth. Locals and foreigners alike flock to the more than 200 pools
that dot the country. Those not in pools might be found in hot springs, where, year round, people sit
in pristine surroundings modulating the temperature by how close or far they sit to a volcanic vent.
And then, there’s the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s iconic image. The geothermal spa lies in the midst of a
lava field formed in a volcanic eruption in 1226 A.D. The spa attracts more people each year than live
in Iceland. The Blue Lagoon’s 5,000m2 lava pool was formed in the late 1970s from runoff water from
a geothermal power plant on the volcanic Reykjanes peninsula, 50km southwest of Reykjavík. Now
its high concept building and spa are becoming as famous as the healing waters themselves.
