“Owning your own home is the American dream,” says Jennifer Siegal, founder and head of
the California-based Office of Mobile Design (OMD). “But for many it’s a compromised dream
when the only affordable choice is a trailer.” To provide cheerier alternatives, the OMD has
created portable homes which leave a small environmental footprint and look a lot better
than those in traditional trailer parks. Their range includes the Seatrain House, a home built
from recycled storage and grain trailers, and the newer modular line, Take Home™, a one to
four bedroom pre-fab construction, costing from USD 240-270 per square foot. There are
currently a dozen houses in various phases of production being produced for customers
all over southern California. Typical clients are usually single-family first-time homebuyers.
“They are very interested in good modern design and are very design conscious,” says Siegal.
