LOS ANGELES
Hollywood is the capital of the entertainment business, so a glitzy
version of Los Angeles has always been splashed across the silver
screen – the darn Santa Monica pier seems to show up in just
about every film ever made. The films of Michael Mann, such as
Heat and Collateral, depict another side of LA, a detached city full
of lonely and withdrawn characters.
TOKYO
Lost in Translation, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is a kind
of tone poem dedicated to Tokyo. You get the buzz and bright
lights of the city alongside the alienation so often felt when
traveling. Plus, you experience all over again your own summer-
camp romance.
NEW YORK CITY
Anything by Woody Allen, and starring Mia Farrow or Diane
Keaton. Okay, so the director slept with his stepdaughter, and his
movies are all the same. But nobody captures New York on film
better than Woody.P
