Iceland review - 2004, Page 49
THINGVELLIR 47 Thingvellir is Iceland’s most prized landmark. The national park, which is bisected by giant, geological fissures and faults, is home to the world’s first parliament, and it holds a certain reverence not only for Icelanders, but also the blanket of tourists who descend upon it annu- ally. But it’s more than a landmark. Thingvellir is the site of Iceland’s second-largest lake (Thingvallavatn) and the area’s natural vistas are stunning, especially during the summer when the midnight sun hovers low on the horizon.
