In north Iceland you’ll find the beautiful Skagafjördur fjord and the
Húnavatnss‡sla districts. This area is renowned for its horsemansship and horse
breeding, and throughout the rugged highlands you’ll be able to go on adven-
turous horse riding trips.
Ride along the ancient Kjalvegur road or north to the coast of historic Thingeyri
and across one of Iceland’s largest lakes: Hópid. Fly fishing has also become one
of the area’s most popular activities with some of Iceland’s finest salmon fishing
rivers and lakes located in the district. Down by the coast you’ll be able to spot a
great variety of seabirds and seals. At Vatnsnes and Skagi are large breeding
grounds for seal, and visitors can get pretty close to these interesting mammals
and observe them in their natural surroundings. There are also plenty of interest-
ing museums in the area, such as the Emigration Centre in Hofsós which focuses
on the history of the Icelanders who emigrated to Canada and the US in earlier
centuries. In Skagafjördur you’ll find a stately turf farm, Glaumbær, from the
eighteenth century. Also not to be missed are the Reykjar Folk Museum and the
Blönduós Textile Museum which features a collection of local handicrafts.
