GLACIER MADNESS
Iceland is famous for its glaciers and black-sand beaches, so why not
experience both of them? It’s easy. The outdoor adventure company
Arcanum will take you there.
First stop is M‡rdalsjökull glacier. Only two hours from Reykjavik,
M‡rdalsjökull is the most accessible glacier in Iceland. There’s nothing
like gliding free over this glacial expanse. For those not interested in
snowmobiling solo, Arcanum also runs super-jeeps to the glacier.
After zooming through this winter wonderland, hop on an ATV and zip
across the black sands of Sólheinasandur. Ride the black sands with
M‡rdalsjökull looming in the distance and it’s as if you’re starring in a
scene straight out of a ghostly thriller.

SAILING AROUND THE CLIFFS
Dyrhólaey
As anyone who has travelled around the south coast of
Iceland will be aware, landscapes as dramatic as Dyrhólaey
need to be taken in over some period of time. From the
towering rock pillars standing offshore, to the abundant
birdlife around the cliffs of the promontory, there is plenty
to take in sitting on the beach.
Many choose to take the guided tour, which takes place
both on land and on water. The guided trip starts in
Dyrhólar and continues along the beach to an opening in
the cliffs. From there, the ship is launched into the ocean,
and it sails around the rock pillars near the beach. In addi-
tion to the many birds around the pillars, seals can also be
found sunning themselves on the rocks or swimming near
the boat.

When you're travelling in a foreign country, the most important thing is to find an appropriate

rooms if desired. All told, this charming stone house can hold up to 46 people in its 12 spacious
rooms. The staff is quite friendly, and they offer transportation to and from the airport for a rea-
sonable price.
