Iceland review - 2016, Síða 58
56 ICELAND REVIEW
Capturing a combination of major events and everyday life in Iceland
in 2015, the winning photographs also cover subject matter including
the deportation of asylum seekers, young Icelanders emigrating to
Norway in search of better opportunities and, in the winning photo
series, people enjoying the annual horse roundup in Skagafjörður,
North Iceland.
Each year, a jury selects the Press Photographs of the Year in seven
categories: News, Sport, Landscape, Portrait, Magazine, Daily Life and
Photo Story—as well as the overall Photo of the Year. This year, 83
photographs were selected for the final exhibition showcasing the best
of Icelandic photojournalism from the past year, chosen from a total of
904 entries. *
News Photograph of the Year:
An Albanian family, with a young child
suffering from long-term illness, was
deported from Iceland [after their
application for asylum was rejected]
just before Christmas. The act caused
an outcry among the public who
pressured the government to reverse
its decision. Eventually they were
brought back and granted Icelandic
citizenship.

From the jury: The image illustrates well the global situation today, early in the morning, when an
immigrant family is brought onto a bus. The fear is obvious in the face of the girl in the foreground
of the image, as is the insecurity of the whole family, headed into the unknown. The image makes the
viewer think about the insecurity faced by these people who are deported in the darkness of night.
