The Reykjanes Peninsula is a dynamic region—one that is
defined by its vast lava fields, numerous hot springs, lava
caves, volcanic craters and rugged landscape. The region
is a hotbed for outdoor activities, including horse riding, hik-
ing and bathing in hot springs, while enjoying an uninterrupted
view of the landscape. The luxury Diamond Suites boutique ho-
tel is at the center of it all and aims to accommodate travelers
who are looking for unrivaled customer service in a luxury suite.
In fact, Diamond Suites, which opens on May 17, will be the first
five-star hotel in Iceland.
HIDDEN GEM
Outfitted with sumptuous furniture, the Diamond Suites come in
different sizes and styles. “Each one of them is individually dec-
orated and features its own set of details and surprises,” says
Steinþór Jónsson, owner and hotel manager. “It’s everything
the luxury traveler is looking for. It’s completely exclusive. All
the materials, furniture and equipment are handpicked, specially
imported and custom-made. You won’t find this in any store for
that matter.” Just the bathtub in one of the bathrooms took five
weeks to install, due to the amount of precision and detail. One
of the headboards took 12 weeks to make and was carved from
a single piece of wood. While it is the only headboard of its kind
in our suites, each space features a different kind of uniqueness.
The suites are spacious, without a lot of walls and doors, cre-
ating an open, fluid space. “We are doing something that is
considered quite different,” says Steinþór. “When we were de-
signing the suites, we didn’t use an architect, we simply bought
high-end materials and worked on them slowly for two years.
With great help from my staff members, we are so proud of how
it all came together.” Steinþór reveals that the hotel has accom-
modated select clients ahead of the opening. “So far, we have
hosted world leaders, famous singers and actors, and tourists
seeking a high-end hotel experience.”
