The lower hall of Winnipeg’s Scandinavian
Centre was comfortably filled for a
“beer and hot dog” fundraiser on Friday,
November 15. The Icelandic Canadian Frón held
the event in support of Lögberg-Heimskringla’s
Hidden Treasure Project. There appears to have
been more coffee consumed than beer, but it’s
the thought that counts. On the other hand, the
hot dog tray had to be replenished frequently.
The evening combined something we all
love – “a great opportunity to meet up and
spend a social evening with other members of
the community,” as the organizers put it – and
something we need (or at least benefit from) – “an
easy way to support the newspaper.” As they put
it: “Lögberg-Heimskringla is a very important
part of our community and, as you know, survives
on the support of the Icelandic community.”
The L-H Puffin Store was open and had
a robust evening selling merchandise and
subscriptions. A couple of generous people
also stopped by with donations for the paper.
Icelandic Canadian Frón also had items for sale:
Icelandic chocolate, their 100th anniversary
commemorative necklace, which was created
by Hillary Druxman, and copies of the Icelandic
National League’s 2020 calendar. Next year’s
calendar is a real treasure itself, by the way –
each day introduces an Icelandic word and each
month’s image is overwritten with a practice
dialogue. We’re all only a year away from having
a 365-word Icelandic vocabulary.
There was a silent auction and a 50/50 draw.
Unlike many social evenings where the draws
are held almost at the end, the winning tickets
were drawn earlier in the evening – shortly after
8:30. This meant that attendees were able to head
home early, if they wished, and many did. When
this happened, it occurred to me that Icelandic
community events in North America commonly
wind up before the time when parties and concerts
in Iceland are often beginning. (I recall my first
visit there when my cousin’s daughter said she
was going to a concert. Eleven o’clock rolled
around and we told her that we had enjoyed her
company, since she’d obviously passed on the
concert to visit with us. “Oh, no,” she replied, “the
concert doesn’t start for another hour.”)
We at Lögberg-Heimskringla would like to
thank Icelandic Canadian Frón and its devoted
leaders for their show of support.
Not only will the proceeds of
the evening help us with the
Hidden Treasure Project, but the
encouragement and goodwill are
truly priceless.
The Hidden Treasure Project
aims to raise $12,000 to spruce
up the façade of L-H’s offices
on Marion Street in Winnipeg.
Simply put, our office space is a
hidden treasure and the outside
of the building doesn’t reflect the
wonderful activities that happen
inside. “We need your help to
make Lögberg-Heimskringla’s
presence on Marion Street stand
out,” says L-H president Alicyn
Goodman. “We are thrilled with
our internal working space, but
we certainly need to make the
outside of our building shine.”
A more noticeable and
appealing exterior will serve to
promote Lögberg-Heimskringla
to the people riding in the tens of
thousands of vehicles that pass by
each day while making the space
more inviting and welcoming to
the general public, not to mention
easier to find. We want the public
to know we’re here.
