Smile of the Wolf
by Tim Leach
In 10th century Iceland, in the darkness
of midwinter, two friends set out on an
adventure but end up killing a man.
The narrator of their story is Kjaran, a
wandering poet in a land that prizes its'
poetry. His friend Gunnar is a warrior,
living a domesticated life with his family.
The two men must decide whether to
own up to the killing or conceal it. It is
a tale of exile, revenge, duels, betrayals,
love and two friends struggling to
survive in a desolate landscape that is
governed by a fierce honour code.
"The focus in Leach's book is not the
fighting, but on the strange, inescapable
logic that makes the fighting inevitable."-
Times (London) Book of the Month.
