most successful year in the |
operation of both homes,
substantial progress has been
made, and our endeavours
now, as in the past, have been
b 1 e s s e d . We have been
strengthened and guided and
I feel that we can look to
the future with confidence.
The several reports which
will be presented this after-
noon verify the progress
which has been made. At this
stage I wish, as your chair-
man, to express appeciation to
the staff for their loyalty and
devotion to the cause of Betel
and particularly for their
kindness and understanding
in caring for our aged people.
Our agenda contains an im-
portant item which will be
brought before the meeting
for your consideration. The
need for a total care or nurs-
ing home becomes increasing-
ly apparent with each passing
year. At this meeting I pro-
pose to appoint a committee
of the Board to study the
feasibility of such a project,
t h e financial involvement,
the measure of government
assistance and a suitable
location, etc.
Finally I wish to thank you
for your attendance and your
interest and trust that we
will enjoy a most successful
meeting.

ADMINISTRATOR'S
REPORT
Once again it is my privi-
lege to present the following
report covering the operation
of the Selkirk and Gimli
Homes respectively.
As a preface to the report
I wish to refer to a matter
of importance which requires
a full report to the Board of
Directors as it comes within
the category of policy deci-
sion.
In the late fall of 1967 we
were advised that the Vic-
toria General Hospital, situa-
ted on River Avenue, Winni-
peg, would be offered for sale
to a selected organization
who would me interested in
developing this facility as an
extended care home.
The Manitoba Hospital
Commission have or will ap-
prove the construction of the
new Victoria General Hos-
pital in Fort Garry and the
present building will there-
fore become surplus to their
requirements.
We were called to a meet-
ing in the office of the De-
puty Minister of Welfare and
your Chairman and Adminis-
trator represented the Betel
Board. Present at the meet-
ing were Mr. Gordon Holland
Chairman of the Manitoba
Hospital Commission, W.
Noyes, Director of Elderly
Persons Housing and K. O.
McKenzie, Deputy Minister
of Welfare. Mr. Holland and
| Mr. McKenzie advised that
both the Government and the
Commission are interested in
selling the hospital to a re-
sponsible organization who in
turn would agree to remodel
the building and develop a
modern facility to care for
elderly persons who require
extended care.
The cost of the building,
land, together with the esti-
mated remodelling expense,
totalled $1,215,000.00, which
figure would be cost-shared
by the Government on a 1/3
basis, the remaining portion
to be covered by a C.M.H.A.
mortgage.
Following the meeting Mr.
Johannson and I discussed
this proposition in consider-
able detail and we came to
the conclusion that the deal
as presented would be unac-
ceptable to the Board for the
following reasons:
(1) The cost is prohibitive
considering the age of the
building and the limited
land area available.
(2) The present Government
formula provides f o r a
grant of $9,500.00 per bed
for new construction
which would enable the
Board to construct a new
building of 100 beds at a
'comparative cost.
(3) Our Chairman suggested
that if the building were
sold on the open market
it would bring consider-
able less than the asking
price.
There is, however ,an ur-
gent need for total c a r e
homes in Manitoba and we of
the Betel Board may be well
advised to project and subse-
quently develop such a pro-
ject to meet our future re-
quirements. We now care for
144 aged persons in both
Homes with only 20 infir-
mary beds which is far below
our normal requirements.
It is interesting to note that
a neighbouring organization
are now constructing a 120
bed care facility and a num-
ber of other organizations are
planning f u t u r e develop-
ments to provide needed care
for our aged population.
On leaving the meeting Mr.
Johannson and I made it clear
that we would inform the
Board with respect to the
proposition as submitted but
in no way commit Betel to
the suggested project.
Reference was made in my
last report to the fact that
considerable m o n i e s have
been expended during the
last five years in making
needed repairs and improve-
ments to our Gimli Home.
The aggregate sum so ex-
pended during this five year
period is substantial covering
both major and minor work
projects. We were of the op-
inion that these extra ex-
penditures should be cost-
shared by the province and
a series of discussions follow-
ed in which Mr. Johannson
and I presented our case on
behalf of Betel.
Mr. Noyes, Director of El-
derly Persons Housing, was
most helpful in establishing
our claim. A Treasury
Board form of presentation
was accordingly prepared and
submitted to the Department
for their consideration.
I am now pleased to report
that our submission was suc-
cessful and we recently re-
ceived a cheque together
with a most friendly letter
from the Minister in which
he congratulated Betel on its
splendid past record of
achievement and stated that
the Department would gladly
co-operate with the B e t e 1

Jóhannes var fæddur við
Narrows í Siglunessveit 27.
september 1895, sonur hjón-
anna, Páls og Guðnýjar Ker-
nested, sem numið höfðu land
við Narrows um 1893. Jó-
hannes ólst upp hjá föður sín-
um og dvaldist í fæðingar-
sveit sinni alla ævi nema ár-
in sem hann þjónaði í sjóher
Canada.
Jóhannes byrjaði búskap
sinn í félagi við föður sinn
og bjó með honum þar til
faðir hans lézt. Hann kvænt-
ist 13. október 1928 Arnþóru,
d ó 11 u r Davíðs Gíslasonar,
fyrrum bónda við Hayland.
Settust ungu hjónin að á
æskuheimili húsbóndans. Var
heimili þeirra hið mesta
myndarheimili. Eign-
uðust þau sex syni: Leonard
í Prince George, B. C., Her-
bert, í Teulon, Man., Kern í
Board in any future devolp-
ment.
The Manitoba Hospital As-
sociation are now in the pro-
cess of organizing a subsidi-
ary organization to include
Homes for the Aged, Con-
valescent Homes, etc. The As-
sociation forwarded a lengthy
questionnaire together w i t h
an application form for en-
rollment in the proposed or-
ganization. On the basis of
the information as submitted
the cost of membership for
both Homes is quite costly.
On studying this material
carefully I came to the con-
clusion than the best interest
of Betel would be served by
maintaining our present sta-
tus as a non-member.
I therefore wrote the Ex-
ecutive Director, Mr. Crew-
son, and respectfully declined
the invitation to join the new
organization.

ar, drengjunum í móðurstað.
Var þá yngsti drengurinn að-
eins fimm ára. Hún ól þá upp
og reyndist þeim elskuleg
móðir, en Jóhannes var hinn
bezti heimilisfaðir.
Barnabörnin eru þrettán. —
Fjóra bræður hafði Jóhannes
misst og eina systur. Auk
Katrínar Kernested, 1 i f i r
hann önnur systir, Mrs. Thor-
dis Thorvardson í Winnipeg.
Jóhannes var félagslyndur
og studdi öll þau mál, sem
voru byggðinni til framfara.
Skólaráðsmaður var hann í
Narrow-skólahéraði í mörg
ár. Einnig var hann í stjórn-
arnefnd A s h e r n Farmer’s
Creamery til dauðadags.
Hann var framúrskarandi
nágranni, hjálpsamur og fórn-
fús. Þótti gott að leita ráða
til Jóhannesar, þegar menn
voru í vanda staddir. Kímni-
gáfu hafði hann góða og
komu menn jafnan léttari í
lund þegar þeir höfðu sótt
Jóhannes heim, þótt þeim
hefði verið þungt í skapi
áður. Minningarnar um þenn-
an göfuga mann munu lengi
lifa í huga og hjörtum ætt-
ingja og vina.
Hann var jarðsettur í Oak
View Cemetery 10. apríl frá
Grace Lutheran C h u r c h í

Kristín Sveinsdóttir og ég.
þegar við vorum að sigla inn
á höfnina í Reykjavík, bund-
um við það fastmælum að
fara öll til Þingvalla, meðan
við stæðum við hér syðra. Eg
ætlaði að vera hjá föður mín-
um í Hafnarfirði, en sam-
samferðafólk mitt ætlaði að
dveljast í Reykjavík. Ingólfur
hét að láta mig vita, þegar
lagt yrði af stað í Þingvalla-
förina.
Við komum til Reykjavík-
ur að áliðnum degi. Þá um
kvöldið fór ég suður í Hafn-
arfjörð og var þar einn dag
um kyrrt. En daginn þar eftir
fór ég inn í Reykjavík ásamt
Gunnari bróður mínum, í og
með til þess að ná tali af sam-
ferðafólki mínu. Þegar við
komum til Reykjavíkur, héld-
um. við upp í húsið númer 7
í Grjótagötu. Þar bjó þá frú
Ingunn Blöndal. Hún bauð
okkur inn. Undir eins og við
erum setzt inn í stofu, spyr
ég, hvort hún viti nokkuð um
samferðafólk mitt. „Hvernig
stendur á þessu?“ svarar frú
Ingunn. „Ætlaðir þú ekki að
vera með? Það fór til Þing-
valla í morgun.“ í sömu svip-
an slær klukkan þrjú. Mér
rann í skap og segi. „Eg skal
heita fimm krónum á Strand-
arkirkju, ef það kemst ekki
alla leið austur.“ Um kvöldið
héldum við bræðurnir aftur
til Hafnarfjarðar.
Morguninn eftir um tíu-
leytið er hringt til mín í síma.
En þegar ég kem að síman-
um, heyri eg ekki annað en
fliss og hlátur. Eftir litla
stund skil eg þó, að við sím-
ann er Kristín Sveinsdóttir
og Sigríður Björnsdóttir ráð-
herra. Þá segir Kristín: „Þú
verður strax að koma til
Þingvalla með fröken Lor-
ange, því að þú lofaðir að
vera með í förinni.“ „Eru þið
ekki búin að fara til Þing-
valla?“ svara ég. Hún segir,
að eg skuli fá að vita um það,
þegar ég komi inn eftir.
Daginn eftir fer eg til
Reykjavíkur. Hitti eg þar
Kristínu Sveinsdóttur og Ing-
ólf Jónsson fyrst af samferða-
fólki mínu. Þau höfðu þá
sögu að segja, að morguninn
áður hefðu þau öll lagt af
stað til Þingvalla. Einhverra
orsaka vegna gátu þau ekki
látið mig vita af ferðinni, og
kenndi Ingólfur sér um það.
Þau kváðust hafa fengið tvo
úrvalshesta með vagni hjá
Geir kaupmanni Zoega, því
að það orð lék á í Reykjavík,
að hestar þeir, sem Thomsen
kaupmaður var vanur að ljá
