LÖGBERG-HEIMSKRINGLA, FIMMTUDAGINN 2. JÚNÍ 1977 7 A MUSICAL WELCOME TO SUMMER A musical “Welcome to Summer" concert, organized by the Gimli chapter of the Icelandic National League of North America was held at the Gimli Lutheran Church at 8 o’clock, Thursday, May 26th. Lögberg-Heimskringla was on hand to take in this event which was well at- tended by young and old alike. Following the national an- them and chairman’s re- marks by Mrs. Lára Ter- gesen, the concert opened with selectíons by the Luth- eran Junior Choir. conduct- cd by Eunice Timgren and accompanied by Hedy Bjorn- san and Louise Solvason. A greeting from Allan Olson followed. One of the highlights of the evening was the per- formance given by Mrs. K r i s t i n e Kristofferson’s grade 4 and 5 Icelandic class members. It was a special treat for the audience, and especially for the senior citi- zens in attendance, to watch these ten- and eleven-year- olds, the boys in “lopapey- sur” and the girls in Ice- landic costumes complete with “skotthúfur.,” as they recited verses and sang old, familiar songs in flawless Icelandic. Mrs. A1 Bennett accompanied on the piano. Many of Mrs. Kristoffer- son’s students attended the Icelandic Cultural and Lan- guage Camp held near Gimli last summer and are enthu- siastic about t h i s year’s camp at Husavick. Melvin Mclnnis, one of the camp leaders, was present to speak on past camps and plans for this year’s camp. Several members of the newly organized Interlake Icelandic Choir, led by Ingi- björg McKillop of Stone- wall, inade their first pro- gram appearance at the con- cert and sang some old fa- vourites. The choir members, who come from all over the Interlake region, have been meeting for practices at sev- eral of the Interlake centres. Among the many other musical items were a fine demonstration of talent on piano by Maureen Malis from Winnipeg, a recitation of Davíð Stefánsson’s poem “Sálin Hans Jóns Míns” by Susan and Connie Cmikie- witcz from Clandeboye and ' duet and trio numbers by Eunice T i m g r e n , Hedy Bjornson and Denis Calrson. Another highlight of the concert was the performance given by Marv Peterson, a gifted and well known vocal- ist from Gimli who is fast making a name for herself in the field of music. The crowd’s warm response to her performance of a diffi- cult opera piece indicated their appreciation of this outstanding talent. She was accompanied by Diane Ber- ger. The concert closed with Eldgamla Isafold and the Queen and was followed by lunch. N r UNITED CANADA eftir Kristjón B. Sigurðsson í blaðinu í dag er birt ljóð eftir Kristján B.
