Stephansson
The name of Stephan Stephansson
has frequently appeared on the pages
of L.-H. in recent times. During the
early years of this century his
poetical works appeared in both
Lögberg and Heimskringla, creating
widespread interest, sometimes con-
troversial, but his skill led to his ac-
ceptance as an outstanding poet.
His works appeared in the Icelan-
dic language, and for that reason, are
privy only to those who have a good
understanding of the language. The
impact of his poetical skills has led
many to attempt translation into
English in rhymed verse. Most gave
up, others gave up after two or three
stanzas, yet there were some who
succeeded. The probable reason for
their difficulties was their problem
of lacking equal skill in both
languages, not quite able to penetrate
the thoughts of the poet and some-
what short on poetical skills.
Be that as it may, ihe following
poem — translated into English —
can give our readers some insight in-
to the poetical thoughts of this
Western Icelander whose impact
never lies at rest, but keeps coming
to the fore, although his lifespan end-
ed many years ago.
This translation by my father Rev.
Gudmunður Árnason was published
