The Dutch companies involved in the project are PGEM, EPON and NKF Cable, and on the Icelandic side is Landsvirkjun . Preliminary studies indicate that it is technically achievable to transport power through new types of cables without much power loss. Under dis- cussion is also that a cable factory be built in Iceland, which could be in Geothermal area at Nesjavellir near Þingvallavatn. The latest news is that German and Scottish cóncems are also showing interest in buying electricity from Iceland, and discussions with them are under way. No less exciting is the news that production and export of hydrogen may become a reality for Iceland. Hydrogen is the cleanest buming fuel known to man and Europeans seem to be determined to switch as much as possible over to that fuel. Germans have for some time bought hydrogen produced in Canada, but preliminary studies on production in Iceland indicate that it could be up to 25% cheaper to produce. Another factor is that Canadian producers would most likely be heavily involved in exports to the US when that country seriously starts to tum away from fossil fuels. Untapped rivers and steam power from the hot spring areas make it possible for Icelanders to produce hydrogen in the cleanest way. It can of course be produced by power gen- erated by coal buming or oil, but that defeats the purpose as these power sources are polutants. Europeans are far advanced in the technology of using hydrogen. German concerns displaying that technology in Iceland last month brought with them two car engines designed to burn hydrogen, one a Mercedes Benz, the other a BMW. Transit buses are increasingly being converted to the use of this fuel and a prototype of Airbus is in the making. The Russians have for some time been flying the Tupolev 155 cargo plane on hydrogen. What makes hydrogen feasible today is that European countries plan a tax on fossil fuels as a means to fight polution. Who knows, maybe Iceland will richly benefit from supplying the world with a clean power source. Based on news items from Morgun- blaðið and Tíminn.
