14 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 30. október 1992 Eulogy For Stefan August Sigurdson Dettvered by Sylvla Sigurdson I feel very honoured to deliver the eulogy to my father-in-law this after- noon. Though our hearts are heavy and tears do flow, it is not to moum our father that we gather here today, but rather to give thanks to Almighty God for his life and for his release from it. Dad was bom in Ames, Manitoba on August 5, 1907 to Stefan Sigurdson and Gudrún Magnusdóttir, the youngest of eight children - he had five other half brothers and a half sister. On November 6, 1931 Dad mar- ried Valdheiður Lara Jonasson and they raised seven children - two sons and five daughters. They and their families are: Thor (Sylvia) - Thora, Carol, & Cindy; Betty (Norman) Jonasson - Gail, Colin, Norm, & Candace; Inga (Ralph) Stucky - Todd, Janis, Jamie & Kris; Marilyn (Emil) Schnedar - Jeri Lynne, Wendell, Jennifer, & Warren; Stefan (Mary Ann) - Rhonda & Inga; Rosanne (John) Borgfjord - Mark & Scott; Laurel (Randy) Rodgers - Dustin & Tyler. He had 19 great - grand chil- dren. Dad was predeceased by all his brothers, one sister, and two grand children - Debra Mae Jonasson in 1960, and Garrick Brett Sigurdson in 1990. He is survived by one sister, Vigdis Einarson of Brandon, e.c. There was a disappointing tum out of only 30-35 people at the meeting and that number included many scholarship winners and their family members. Voting members numbered at most 15 to 20 with numerous exec- utive members missing. With the club’s financial program at an all time high and a healthy membership of 534, where are our members and why are they not taking an active interest in club matters? The Treasurer’s report was profes- sionally produced and presented by Wayne Brandson. Total current and fixed assets of the club as of Aug. 31, 1992 - $333,032. Mortgage and other liabilities total $195,217. The club’s total equity position is $137,815. Total revenues for fiscal year Sept. 1/91- Aug. 31/92 - $43,906 with donations amounting to $10,910 (coming mostly from Sólskin). Club operating expenses came to $11,933 plus $32,403 for Iceland House amounting to a total of $44,337. The club’s net income for the year showed a loss of $430.35. The Convenor’s report was cheer- fully given by Margaret Amirault. She described a busy year of activities for her hard working volunteers. The Christmas party proved to be the popular event of the year with about 200 people in attendance. The rest of the activities showed a decline in attendance overall. The Þorrablót Stefan and Valdheiöur Sigurdson — a long, happy marriage. Manitoba. Mom and Dad enjoyed a beautiful married life together, and 64 of their family members gathered last November to celebrate their 60th anniversary with them'. It was a day we will all cherish with the beautiful memories that we shared. Dad was a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg for many years. In 1944, he moved his family into Winnipeg where he worked as a carpenter. In 1947, the family moved back to Ames and Mom and Dad bought one of the Arnes General Stores and operated that until 1963. Dad continued to work as a car- penter most of his working years. He was a man of many interests though. He was the manager and one of the founding members of the Arnes Credit Union, he sold insurance, and was active on many community pro- jects throughout the years. Gusti was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was known throughout the community for his hearty, jovial laugh. I only had the privilege of know- ing and loving my own father for 19 years, but God reimbursed me, I feel, by giving me a wonderful father- in-law to know and love for over 32 years. I know I speak for the rest of the “in-law kids”, when I say we were treated with the same love and kindness as his own. In 1975, Dad was smitten with a stroke that left him speechless and paralysed on the one side until the day he died. These last 17 years have been difficult years for Mom and Dad. Mom cared for him with unbelievable love and devotion until her health failed. It was then that he tried in every way he could to care for her with the same devotion and love. I pray that we as their children, have learned the lessons of life and how to cope, that they so beautifully taught us. In closing I would like to offer a poem I pray will bless each heart here this aftemoon. The Fifth Season In the spring of life, in the flower of youth, everything is bright and new. In the summer of life, time ofgrowth and change, each day brings new dreams to pur- sue. In the autumn of life, there is a settling down, contentment and sureness in what we do. And in the winter of life, a peace and a wisdom, time to relax and reminisce too. wants acUon saw only 65 people attend and creat- ed a financial loss for the club. It was suggested that the Þorrablót in Seattle may have taken away some of our regular patrons. Naomi Dyer said total member- ship last year was about 525 with about 90 new members and a similar amount of regular members dropping out. Robert Asgeirsson reported that the membership fees received last year covered all the Newsletter costs plus all the costs associated with the printing and mailing of the directory plus the INL membership fees and left an approximate balance of $650. He expressed hope that club mem- bers would step forward to take over To Join B.C. Ströndin Call or write to: Irene Finnson 1441 Howard Ave., Burnaby, B.C.
