Lögberg-Heimskringla - 30.10.1992, Blaðsíða 7
Lögberg-Heimskringta • Föstudagur 30. október 1992 • 7 Gimli stríves to preserve herítage By Maijorle Arnason, Presldent Glmll Chapter Another year has come and gone and our chapter as all others, are doing our best, in our own way, to help preserve our heritage and culture. We hold seven regular meetings and four executive meetings a year, with our annual meeting and election of officers in May. We have an excellent attendance at our meetings and members are all eager to help and support our func- tions. Oli Narfason once again, with his able committee, conducted the pro- gram for the residents at Betel at our January party, and had them singing there favourites songs. I am sorry to report that our Icelandic classes were not held this past year. Donations are given to various organizations and events which con- tribute to the Icelandic culture and heritage. Our main source of income, other than our membership fees, is our annual raffle. This year we were fortu- nate to have the sale of the very popu- lar and successful Heritage Calendars. Monies from our raffles go to support Lögberg Heimskringla. The Gimli Chapter members, Olla and Stefan Stefanson, and myself were in attendance at the Washington con- ference last October 9/91. There we welcomed the historical re-enactment of the Vikings arriving in America, and were very pleased to have had the opportunity once again to say hello to the ever charming President of V/ENjálsbúð Baldwinson's HandMVIart 7 Days a Week Icelandic Goods Available • Oþen Gas Bar Now Oþen Neil and Merilyn Baldwinson Bu». 642-5330 Box 307, No. 0 Hwy. & Alrport Rd., Glmll, Mwi. Jón Ásgeirsson, of the Icelandic Society of Reykjavík, Iceland, should be commended for his effort and hard work in arranging this first joint con- ference, and I am sure, should another such conference be held that there will be more participation from all Chapters and Icelandic Societies in North America, this gives us all an opportunity to discuss our common goals, that is to keep our ties with Iceland and our culture and heritage strong. In October we had the pleasure of having Dr. Finnbogi Guðmundsson address our membership, after which a social hour was held. Our membership chairman Elert Einarson has been very active and generous. He has donated $50.00 as a prize to be drawn among the new members, and has done this for sever- al years. I wish to take this opportuni- ty on behalf of our chapter to thank him. Seattle Club Report By Eric H. Slgmar It was a busy and banner year for our Club! Busy, as we sponsored more special activities than usual in a year’s time - three events wherein we hosted visiting groups, or individuals, from Iceland; as well as pre- senting our usual annual events — Þorrablót, Icelandic Independence Day celebration, the Icelandic Picnic, the Jólabal (Icelandic Christmas Party), and the Jóla messa (Christmas Service). Besides that we co-operated with the Ladies Aid "Eining” in the “Sumardagurinn fyrsti” event, with the Nordic Heritage Museum in the “Tivoli” event, and our Iceland Room Committee was busily involved with the tasks of enhancing displays etc., in our special room in the Museum. It was a banner year because of the good response to many of the above events, especially the large attendances at the Icelandic Independence Day celebra- tion, and the Deccmber “Jólabal”. Many of the other events were well attended and appreciated, with comparable attendance at the Þorrablót and Picnic as in previous recent years.
