Lögberg-Heimskringla - 16.12.1994, Side 6
6 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 16. desember 1994 Light Á Candle For Peace It’s that time of year again when we are going to Christmas Craft sales, be they big or small and in various locations. For her third year now, Tammy Axelsson will be at the Craft Fair in Abbottsford, B.C. When she moved there in 1991 with her husband Grétar and children, Daniel and Fiona, she thought back to the custom of lighting candles on Christmas Eve in Iceland. Tammy had lived a few years in Iceland and while there married Grétar MESSUBOÐ Fyrsta Lúterska Kirkja Pastor Ingthor I. Isfeld 1030 a.m. The Service followed by Sunday School & Cóffee hour. First Lutheran Church 580 Victor St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 1R2 Ph. 772-7444 Axelsson. They came to visit her par- ents Lil and Dan Sigmundson of Gimli and made a decision to stay in Canada. On her first Christmas in B.C., Tammy particulariy remembered the signifi- cance of the Scandinavian cu'stom of lighting a candle for peace. She felt that she should do something about encouraging people in her location to adopt this custom. She began making her “Peace Candle” and with her hus- band’s assistance translated the mes- sage from Icelandic to English and had this printed on cards which she tied to the candle packaging. The message reads: In the spirit of a beautifui Scand- Minnist í ERFÐASKRÁM YÐAR Tupper & Adams BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS ALAN A. ADAMS, Q.C. JOHN A. DAVIDSON HUGH A. ADAMS DOUGLAS A. BEDFORD DONALD L. The small flame flickering in the frosty stillness of the eve of Christ’s birth represents the same flame that flickers within each of us - a flame yeaming for universal peace. Set out the candle as a symbol of your personal dedication to inner, fam- ily, and ultimately, global peace and as an invitation to those around you to place their own flickering desire next to yours and light up their doorsteps, the neighborhood, the city, the coun- try, and, eventually, the entire world, with the calm, quiet joyfulness that true peace brings. The candle’s beauty lies not in its outward shape or size, but in the mes- sage it sends when it is lit and eventu- ally joined by other candles set out at exactly the same moment as symbols of each individual’s desire for peace. One tiny flame will become a huge blaze of hope that lights up the Christmas sky as the Star of the East must have done at Christ’s birth. Tammy found that often people who were new to Canada, stopped to buy her candle because they were familiar with this custom from their country of origin. Her peace candle was registered as a Canada 125 event since she began this project in that year and because of this was interviewed on the local TV. Since this time, Tammy has expand- ed into making beeswax candles as SWEATER & WOOL SH0P SWEATERS $125-$150. ACCESSORIES AS LOW AS $15. She has also joined others at the Craft sale at Iceland House in New Westminster. She has recognized that some Icelandic baking might be appreciated, as well as her candles, at this event. We hope that every candle has been purchased and that Tammy will have the satisfaction of seeing a warm glow for peace in her corner of the world on the eve of Christmas 1994. D.N.
