According to a survey done in
Iceland on foreign tourists, the
Icelandic nature lives up to
expectations. It does not disappoint
anywhere in the country, constantly
changing and surprising the traveller.
Southem Iceland receives the great-
est amount of tourists every year. There
the travellers can find samples of all the
best which Icelandic
nature has to offer; volca-
noes, lava fields, glaciers,
geothermal hot spots,
sands and beaches, to
name a few. Jóhanna B.
Magnúsdóttir, tourist rep-
resentative for the area, is
quoted in last year’s travel
brochure “that variety is
not only found in nature,”
as the area boasts many
historic sites as well. Two
hundred thousand people
visit the area every year.
Southern Iceland
offers grassy low-lands,
wilderness areas and a
beautiful mountain view.
Most Icelandic travellers
___________ in Southem Iceland come
from the capital of Reykjavík to enjoy
the magnificent nature. Here many tra-
ditional pastime activities are offered,
as well as long or short hiking trips into
the interior wildemess.
When driving east over Hellisheiði
heath the Iowland§ stretch out below. At
Seljalandsfoss, nature changes com-
pletely, with the edge of the highlands
close by in all its splendor. This
is a very beautiful area with
waterfalls, such as
Seljalandsfoss and further east
Gljúfrabúi and Skógarfoss
Falls. A walking trail leads
from Skógar east across
Fimmvörðuháls (Five-cairns-
neck) to Þórsmörk. Þórsmörk is
ideal for walks or simply to
enjoy the scenery.
West-Skaftafells district is
endowed with equal amount of
natural gems, like Dyrholaey
and Reynisíjara Beach, where
the basalt caves beckon and
captivate. The Mýrdals-waste-
lands as well are an enchanted
area. Other points of interest are
Skaftártungur, Eldgjá, and
Lakagígar craters, where the
lava flowed from the Skaftár
eruption in 1783. The lava field
is the world’s largest in record-
ed history from one eruption.
