in HafnarQordur. The Institute features exhibitions, concerts,
and lectures.
Midnight Sun
During summer the nights are bright in all of Iceland. In
the month of June the sun never fully sets in the north. There
are even special excursions to the Arctic Circle where you
can experience the midnight sun, that is to say if it is not
cloudy! Keep in mind, however, that the sun at midnight is
not as warm as at midday, so bring along a sweater.
Dining
Restaurants in Iceland offer a wide variety of dishes,
ranging from Icelandic seafood and mountain lamb to inter-
national and oriental cuisine. There are also places that offer
pizza, hamburgers and other less expensive dishes. The aver-
age cost of Icelandic meals is as follows: Breakfast $10 (US);
lunch $10-20; dinner $15-33. The Icelandic Hotel and
Restaurant Association publishes the brochure Restaurants in
Iceland.
Tourist Menu
A special Tourist Menu is valid all year round. The menu
includes soup or hors d’oeuvre, a meat or fish course and cof-
fee. The price in 1995 was $15-17 (US) for lunch and $19-28
for dinner. Children up to five, free of charge, and children
aged six to twelve receive a fifty percent discount. A number
of restaurants and hotels in Reykjavík and in the countryside
offer the Tourist Menu.
Driving in Iceland
Licences
Foreign driving licenses are valid in Iceland for visitors.
Permanent residents who have foreign driving licenses are
issued Icelandic licenses without taking a driving test.
Traffic Rules
Driving in Iceland is on the right-hand side of the road.
Road signals follow the intemational pattem. Seat belts must
be worn by all passengers. Children must be secured by
either safety-belts or safety-seats. Headlights must be used at
all times of the day and night, all year.
Country Roads
Many roads in Iceland’s sparsely populated countryside
are surfaced with loose gravel and must be driven carefully.
Speed Limit
The general speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas, 80
km/h on gravel roads in mral areas and 90 km/h on paved
roads.
Unbridged Streams
At first sight unbridged streams may appear to be easy to
cross, but great care must be taken. Some have fast currents
and conditions can change quickly. Streams must be crossed
slowly in first gear.
Animals
Domestic animals and pets are often found wandering
near the roadside out in the country. Drivers are responsible
for any damage tó them.

Jóhanna Magnúsdóttir informs that
the most recent development in tourism
is Kirkjubæjarstofa which features dis-
plays with various themes such as the
volcanic activity in the western
Vatnajökull Glacier. It is ideal to visit
the display before taking a nature walk
to help the visitor understand the natu-
ral phenomena encountered. The area
has endless opportunities for hiking
trips and at present more walkways are
in the making. As an example of walk-
ing routes the route from Klaustur out
to Systrastapi where the traveller can
view Eldmessutangi (Fire-mass-point)
where pastor Jón Steingrímsson
stopped the flow of lava with his
prayers.
