son) passed away peacefully on
March 11, 2004 at the Sher-
wood Park Care Centre, Alber-
ta, surrounded by her farnily.
She was born in the Vest-
fold area of Manitoba, on Sep-
tember 2, 1904, the third child
of a family of 10 — two broth-
ers and seven sisters.
Her parents, Grimur and

left their farmland and moved to
Winnipeg when she was about
four years old. She was a good

to Normal School and became a
teacher. She taught at Nes for
two years and at the Gimli Pub-
lic School for fíve years — then
married Petur who farmed at
Grenivollum. She decided to
stay home and raise her family
of three. She loved garde'ning
and she created a yard around
the farmhouse that was a beauti-
ful park-like setting.
World War II came along
and there was a severe shortage
of teachers, so she went back to
teaching at the Arnes North
School and then went on to
Riverton Public School as
teacher and principal until she
retired in 1970. She is survived
by her three chldren: Krisitin
Joyce Hykawy (John), Peter
Donald, Richard Freeman (Mar-
garet); five grandchildren: Ken-
neth Hykawy (Roberta), Jo-
Ellen Johannesson, Tyler Peter-
son (Randi), Tami Wolfe
(Trevor), Sandra Peterson; nine
great-grandchildren: Amanda
Hykawy, Kristin Hykawy, Vee-
Anne Johannesson, Peter Bai-
ley, Ashley Peterson, Aaron
Peterson, Breanna Wolfe, Bren-
dan Wolfe and Shaelyn Wolfe
(all will miss their beloved
Granny Vee); two sisters: Win-
nie Tetlock and Joan Letroy; as
well as numerous nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by
her husband Petur; two broth-
ers; five sisters; and three
grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of her life and
inumment will be held at a later
