Trick or treat on Hallowe’en

Afriend of mine called
me on Hallowe’en
evening. “Trick or
treat,” he said, “and just mail it
to me.”
This phone call made me
think about Hallowe’en. I read
somewhere that Hallowe’en
grew out of Celtic rituals for
celebrating a new year, and out
of the medieval prayer rituals
of Europeans — but trick-or-
treat nowadays is a long way
from Tipperary.
At this point I must make a
confession. I like good choco-
late. Especially Belgian choco-
late. Or Icelandic chocolate
with raisins. Made by Nói -
Síríus. If I can’t get my
favorite types I have to settle
for Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut.
In North America I’ve
noticed that I’m different from
most people when it comes to
chocolate. On Hallowe’en
night I heard somebody carry-
ing a big garbage bag say that
Hallowe’en builds muscles in
kids. I also heard somebody
sing “Trick or Treat/Smell my
feet/Give me something good
to eat/Not too big/Not too
small/Just the size of Montre-
al.”
Furthermore, I saw elderly
men dressed in costumes drive
up to houses, then carry silent
infants to the doors and ask for
candy. I would never go to my
neighbours and ask them to
give me candy. Not to mention
go to strangers and ask them to
give me chocolate. And I’m
not used to buying candy to
have ready if, for example,
some stranger carrying a new-
born baby knocks on the door
and asks for sweets.
I went out after the afore-
mentioned phone call and
when I got back somebody had
lost eggs by the front door and
left some on the windows. I
did not know they were selling
eggs during Hallowe’en — but
I did not need any, so it made
no difference although I
missed the salesman. Or
rnaybe it was somebody else.
Who knows. He never came
back to look for his missing
eggs. That would have been a
fool’s errand anyways because
the eggs were broken and of no
use.
One of the reasons I have
problems losing weight is my
appetite for good chocolate.
Especially when I’m working
in the evening. I sincerely
believe that the more chocolate
I eat while writing, the better
the story will be. And I want to
select my chocolate myself.
No offence, but, for example,
Crispy Crunch, Oh Henry!,
Caramilk, Glosettes, Reese,
Snickers or Twix, to name a
few, are simply not my type of
chocolate.
I remembered my friend’s
wish. He wanted me to mail
the treat to him. He did not say
what he wanted but I knew he
would settle for this issue of
Lögberg-Heimskringla and
here it is.
Enjoy your day.

Dear Editor:
I am hoping someone can
help me locate a book I recent-
ly read about. This book is the
story of Erick Hanson
(Hansen) and his wife Jonena
Gudmundson. Both were
natives of Iceland and settlers
of Spanish Fork. The book is
called As I Remember by
Mabel Hanson Redd. If anyone
knows where I may get a copy
of this book or just look at it I
would appreciate you letting
me know.
Thanks again.

Dear Editor:
Don’t let the big orange
moon scare you, it’s only Hal-
lowe’en time. Just like Santa,
there really are no witches,
goblins or spooks.
There’s just Huldufólk
(nice), and Nightwalkers
(bad), trolls that hide under
your bed ready to eat you if
you get out from the covers. So
don’t worry about about witch-
es, just keep your eye on the
trolls and Nightwalkers. (They
bite; witches don’t — no
teeth.) Now, don’t you feel bet-
ter?
As soon as it’s daylight it’s
safe to get out of bed. Sunrise
is at 8:15 today so you’re safe
until sunset at 6:1Ö. Here’s an
old trick my amma and afi
taught me: pile lots of shoes
and books, blankets, toys, etc.,
under your bed — it leaves less
room for trolls and nightwalk-
ers. Better yet, sleep on the
floor — there’s a reason our
ancestors slept on stone beds!
Good luck.

Dear Editor:
Seeing that my twin sister
Violet Mailman and I are about
the oldest identical twins in
Icelandic Canada, next to the
sweet 90-year-old twin sisters
who live at Betelstadur in Win-
nipeg, I decided to send you
this photo to spice up your
paper when there is an empty
spot on a page.
By the way, I am Linda
Lundström’s molher and Linda
and my other daughter Chris-
tine just put on a fashion show
in Reykjavík, Iceland to a
packed house.
My husband Richard
Lundström was born in Yuk-
muk, Sweden and came with
his family to Canada in 1912
or 13. He has passed away. But
we had so much in common.
Thanks.

P.S.: I’m actually “Olavia
Aðalsteinsdóttir,” but my name
got changed to be more Eng-
lish in school.
