min. you will see a sign for Mississippi Lake,

off 7 on Westshore Drive, and again left on
Islandview Drive, and we are number 256. If

Winnipeg, MB: The Jón Sigurdsson Chap-
ter IODE and the lcelandic Canadian Frón
Chapter of the INL invite you to join them at
the Jón Sigurðsson statue on the Manitoba
Legislative Building grounds at 7 p.m. for the
23rd Annual Wreath-Laying Ceremony, to
celebrate the 61 st anniversary of lceland’s
independence. Please meet at the steps of
the Legislative Building at 6:45 p.m. Follow-
ing the wreath-laying ceremony there will be
a musical performance in the theatre of the
Winnipeg Art Gallery, 300 Memorial Boule-
vard at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Markerville, AB: lcelandic Picnic at the
Creamery Museum. Saturday afternoon’s
schedule starts with games at 1 p.m. in
the picnic grounds. The program at 3 p.m.
features the crowning of the fjallkona, selec-
tions by the Saga Singers and the unveiling
of a Woman of Aspenland panel honouring
Helga Stephansson. A potluck supper will

Winnipeg, MB: The lcelandic Canadian
Frón presents Winnipeg's 3rd Annual Kven-
nahlaup. Fron invites women of lcelandic de-
scent and their girlfriends to gather and walk
for exercise and companionship June 11,
2005. Registration cost is $25, and includes
a T-shirt f rom lceland, medal presented at the
finish line and refreshment and snacks. This
is not a fundraiser for the lcelandic Canadian
Frón; any proceeds left will be donated to
CancerCare. Participants will meet again in
Assiniboine Park, by the duck pond.The walk
is around 3 km. Registration and T-shirt pick
up 9 a.m. and walk at 10 a.m. Please con-

The Leif Eiriksson Icelan-
dic Club (LEIC) of Calgary
celebrated Sumardagurinn
fyrsti on April 22, 2005 at the
Calgary Scandinavian Centre.
Along with this annual celebra-
tion of winter’s end and spring’s
beginning was our own celebra-
tion of Alberta’s Centennial.
Margaret Grisdale, Events
Coordinator, organized a won-
derful evening for all those
who attended. Several club
volunteers assisted Margaret
with this event. Dan Grisdale
was a very entertaining master
of ceremonies, Iris Torfason re-
cited Grace in both English and
Icelandic, LEIC Past-President
Carol Blyth did a reading of
interesting trivia from newspa-
pers published in Alberta dur-
ing 1905, and Margaret Geppert
explained how Sumardagurinn
fyrsti is celebrated in Iceland.
Presentations were made
by LEIC President Ron Good-
man to Sylvia Carleton, retired
Office Manager for the Scandi-
navian Centre, then Lome and
Brad Bjamason for winning the
Icelandic Trivia Contest.
A delicious roast beef din-
ner was enjoyed by approxi-
mately 120 adults and children.
Supper was followed by a tom-
bola and a talent show. LEIC
members sang, danced and
played guitar. There were also
interesting displays of art and
replica Viking armour set up
for guests to visit throughout
the evening.
