Giving good
quality back
to the golfers
Steinþór Guðbjartsson
Winnipeg, MB
The Icelandic Open, Lög-
berg-Heimskringlcis annual
golf toumament, has been one
of the paper’s main sources of
income in recent years. Last
year the revenue was about
$20,000, thanks to the organiz-
ing committee, the golfers and
the donors.
Although the toumament
has been a sellout, Dan John-
son, the Chair of the organiz-
ing committee since it started,
emphazises that they can’t take
anything for granted — and
they have to work hard on get-
ting golfers and donors until the
toumament starts.
“It is not full until we tee
off,” he says. “We also have to
make sure that it is an enjoyable
day for everyone involved, that
people understand that it is for
the well-being of the paper and
will retum next year.”
Hard working volunteers
In 2000 Connie Magnus-
son-Shimnowski and Dan John-
son organized a family golf day
to sponsor the Waterfront Cen-
tre in Gimli, Manitoba. It went
well and led to the Icelandic
Open the following summer.
The organizing commit-
tee has been meeting regularly
since last February for the next
tournament, to be held at the
Links on the Lake in Gimli.
Dan Johnson is the Chair. Don
Lindal is the Co-Chair respon-
sible for the corporate sponsors.
Grant Stefanson is the Hole
Sponsor Chair. Bill Perlmutter
is in charge of the budget and
financial position of the tour-
nament. Viola Bjarnason Hil-
ton and Ragnar Bergman are
in charge of the volunteers and
the logistics of the participa-
tion. Brian Tomasson is chair of
the registrations. Audrey Juve
Kwasnica assists him and takes
care of payments. Gary Oddlei-
fson assists Brian as well. Jan-
ice Brownlee is Chairperson for
the Dinner and Prizes. Serena
Goebel is her assistant and as-
sists with the organization at
the toumament.
Keeps
readers
up to date
L-H is very important for
me personally, and, I assume,
all those interested in keep-
ing up to date on news from
the Icelandic communities in
North America. This is why
the INL of Iceland has de-
cided to make all members
automatically subscribers to
the paper.
It is specially acknowl-
edged and commended that
the paper is more than ever
covering news and featur-
ingarticles from more com-
munities in Canada and the
US.
