Gender — Neuter
The boldfaced words in the
dialogue to the right are examples
of nouns in neuter. Neuter nouns
are either strong or weak.
(A) The strong neuter nouns
have no inflectional ending in
nominative: borð “table,” barn
“child,” hús “house,” blóm “flower,”
blað “paper,” kaffi “coffee.”
(B) Weak neuter nouns end in
-a. Most of these nouns refer to
body parts: auga “eye,” eyra “ear,”
lunga “lung,” hjarta “heart.”
To form the definite form of
neuter nouns we add —ið to the end
(barn-ið, blað-ið, te-ið).
Most nouns that end in a
vowel only add an -ð to the end
(auga-ð, eyra-ð, kaffi-ð). Some
exceptions are te-ið “the tea,” hlé-ið
“the break.”

Ferðamaður: Fyrirgeíðu, hvar er næsta kaffihús?
Vegfarandi: Það er kaffiliús þarna á vinstri hönd.
Ferðamaður: Já, hvað heitir það?

Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me where is the nearest
café?
Man on the street: There is a café over there, on the left.
Tourist: Yes, what is it cafled?
Man on the street: It is called The Black Coffee.
Ferðamaðurinn fer inn á kaffihúsið.
Ferðamaður: Áttu laust borð?
Þjónn: Já, það er borð þarna, við fatahengið.
Ferðamaður: Takk.
Ferðamaðurinn sest niður og les matseðilinn.
Þjónn: Iivað má bjóða þér?
Ferðamaður: Eg vil gjarnan fá te.
Ferðamaðurinn drekkur teið.
Ferðamaður: Fyrirgefðu, geturðu sagt mér hvar klósettið
er?

The tourist enters the café.
Tourist: Do you have a vacant table?
Waiter: Yes, there is a table over there, by the cloakroom.
Tourist: Thanks.
The tourist sits down and reads the menu.
Waiter: What can I get for you?
Tourist: I would like to have some tea.
The tourist drinks the tea.
Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me where the washroom
is?
Waiter: The washroom is over there, to the right.
