Neuter nouns are either strong or weak. (A) The strong neuter nouns have no inflectional ending in nominative: borð “table,” barn “child,” hús “house,” blóm “flower,” blað “paper,” kaffi “coffee.” (B) Weak neuter nouns end in -a. Most of these nouns refer to body parts: auga “eye,” eyra “ear,” lunga “lung,” hjarta “heart.” To form the definite form of neuter nouns we add —ið to the end (barn-ið, blað-ið, te-ið). Most nouns that end in a vowel only add an -ð to the end (auga-ð, eyra-ð, kaffi-ð). Some exceptions are te-ið “the tea,” hlé-ið “the break.” Ferð á kaffIhús — A visit to a Café Ferðamaður: Fyrirgeíðu, hvar er næsta kaffihús? Vegfarandi: Það er kaffiliús þarna á vinstri hönd. Ferðamaður: Fyrirgefðu, geturðu sagt mér hvar klósettið er? Þjónn: Klósettið er þarna til hægri. The tourist enters the café. Tourist: Do you have a vacant table? Waiter: Yes, there is a table over there, by the cloakroom. Tourist: Thanks. The tourist sits down and reads the menu. Waiter: What can I get for you? Tourist: I would like to have some tea. The tourist drinks the tea. Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me where the washroom is? Waiter: The washroom is over there, to the right. Exercise Form the definite Hér er hús.
