descent inducted into
Baseball Hall of Fame

Flovent Sigfusson, with a photo of the Siglunes Seals from the
early 1950s. He played for the team for more than 35 years.
A number of athletes of Ice-
landic descent were recently in-
ducted into the Morden Baseball
Hall of Fame. The ceremony,
held at the Morden Rec Centre,
honoured Thor Sigurdson as
well as the Siglunes Seals base-
ball team 1953 - 1958, which in-
cluded many players of Icelan-
dic descent.
Small Community Category
The Siglunes Seals were a
dominant team from the West
Central Interlake compromising
the school districts of Siglunes,
Vogar, Hayland, Darwin and
th@ Narrows. All players came
from the farmlands and held
an annual toumament on the
first Sunday in July. In 1953 the
Seals had a record of 32 wins
and three losses. In 1954 they
played 26 games and lost only
the last one.
Three trophies were avail-
able for competition in the Inter-
lake: the Kirwan Cup, the An-
derson Trophy and the Drewry
Cup. Siglunes won all three in
1953. The Seals won three con-
secutive toumaments July 1, 2
and 3 — Ashem, Grahamdale
and Siglunes and $325 one year.
They also fared well against
teams from larger centres such
as Dauphin, Redbirds, Neepawa
Cubs, St. Boniface Native Sons
and Fort Whyte. All toumament
prize money was tumed back to
the Siglunes Athletic Associa-
tion to promote sports.
Siglunes spanned an era
from the 1920s to the 1980s
and such families as Freeman,
Johnson, Larson, Sigfusson and
Sveistrup dominated the rosters.
Individual Category
Thor Sigurdson, who was
an outstanding pitcher in the
Interlake during the postwar
years, possessed a good fast
ball, a drop curve, control and
the ability to exploit the oppo-
sition’s weaknesses, served as
a player-coach at Eriksdale,
which was a dominant touma-
ment team. He also pitched for
Warren and Stonewall in the
Winnipeg Senior League. The
nomination nomination was by
retired R.C.M.R officer, Fred
Ross and supported by George
Ledochowski (Teulon), Marv
Sveistmp (Siglumes) and Dick
Friesen (Stonewall).
