Churchbridge celebrated
Saskatchewan’s Centen-
nial in grand style, July
15, 16 and 17. Officials of the
organizing committee, which
had been preparing for the event
for many months, estimate that
some 1,300 people registered
for the weekend, coming from
throughout Canada, the U.S.
and even overseas.
Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant
Governor, Lynda Haverstock
officially opened the event. Fol-
lowing the opening ceremony
was a show of local talent, a
musical tribute to 100 years.
The curling rink was the
headquarters for the commit-
tee and also the location for the
meals and the Saturday night
dance. The former fumiture
store displayed all of the school
districts in the Churchbridge
area. There were pictures of stu-
dents that filled the large store.
This also became the meeting
place where friends met and
chatted. Not far away from that
was another interesting display
of antique utensils, tools and
toys set up as a “mini museum”
in the Evergreen Club, the se-
niors’ facility.
There were two dances on
Friday night; one in the com-
munity centre for “the older
set” and the other on the street
for the young or young at heart.
That night night a very impres-
sive 30-minute display of fire-
works was presented adjacent
to the town’s schools, thus en-
abling those at the dances to see
the fireworks.
Saturday moming’s Cen-
tennial parade included ap-
propriately 100 entries. The
parade, led by two RCMP of-
ficers, featured the marching
school band, large horses, small
horses, a dressed-up mule, farm
equipment old and new, and a
large birthday cake float en-
tered by Mosaic Potash. There
were antique cars and a special
built bicycle for two. Many lo-
cal businesses and organiza-
tions were also represented.
Because 2005 is the Year
of the Veteran, all branches of
the Armed Forces were repre-
sented in the parade.
Valla Marvin, from the
Icelandic community, was one
of two people over 100 years
of age that rode in the parade.
Ethyl Hinrikson rode in the
wagon with the people that
were over 90 years of age. Also
in the parade was Einar John-
son, newly nominated member
for the Saskatchewan Baseball
Hall of Fame.
Sunday moming featured
an ecumenical service led by
the Prairie Blend gospel quar-
tet from Langenburg. An infor-
mal, aftemoon fashion show
in the community centre drew
a standing room only crowd to
see dresses, suits, and uniforms
from a wide range of decades,
all provided by local residents.
Later that day, a large group
gathered at the beautifully de-
veloped Memorial Park to take
part in its dedication. Twelve
murals serve as the backdrop
to the park, each representing
a period of time in the history
of the town. They were the First
Nations, the Immigration, the
Depression, the World Wars,
Recovery, International Miner-
als and Chemicals potash mine,
Services, Sports, Technology
and the lOOth birthday of the
province.

pitched in.
There were so many things
to see and people to visit with
that a person could not do it all.
In a town of about 800, there
were over 200 volunteers. The
prevailing sentiment was, “Well
done Churchbridge, you have
made your ancestors proud!’
