OBITUARIES
Olga Thorhildur Eyford Johnson
18 February 1917-
2 September 2005
Olga passed away peacefully
in Sechelt, BC in the presence of her
daughters, who had gathered to say
goodbye.
She was predeceased by Os-
kar Johnson, her beloved husband
of 52 years; her parents, Baldrun and
Framar Eyford; five sisters Anna Sig-
urdson, Stefania Porter, Sina Neyedli,
Ranka Gislason and Lara Antonsson;
four brothers Jorundur [Jerry], Harald,
Larus and Baldur [Bud] Eyford, her in-
fant granddaughter Ingrid Paetkau, and
her infant great-granddaughter Soren
Paetkau.
Memories of Olga will be treasured
by her brother Franklin Eyford (Irene) of
North Vancouver; her four daughters:
Baldrun Bonnie Paetkau [Eric] of Sech-
elt, Olof Nightingale [Chris] of Powell
River, Alda Grames of Halfmoon Bay
and Heather Johnson [Greg Kravec]
of Vancouver; her 13 grandchildren:
Karin Kydland [Karsten], Carla Paetkau
[Jack Bryson], Guy Paetkau, Johannes
Grames, Dinos Grames [Belinda], Mark
Paetkau [Nicola], Panos Grames [An-
nabel Webb], Kristos Grames, David
Paetkau, Sonja Kravec, Michael Kravec,
Alda Kravec and Paul Kravec; and her
13 great-grandchildren: Jordan and
Miles Grames; Sirus Grames-Webb;
Malcolm, Duncan and Ingrid Bryson;
Molly, Lydia and Bjorn Kydland; Owen,
Brynia, Rhys and Blythe Paetkau; as
well as many nieces and nephews and
friends.
Olga was born and raised on the
family homesteád in Siglunes on the
shores o< Lake Manitoba. She matricu-
lated at Jon Bjarnason Academy in
Winnipeg. She and Oskar were married
in 1937. They built a home and raised
their four daughters at Nordheim, the
Johnson family farm, enjoying an ac-
tive community life in Siglunes. Rising
lake water levels from a dam being con-
structed in northern Manitoba made
farming impossible, forcing the family
to make a difficult decision to move to
Hay River NWT in 1955, then to White-
horse, Yukon in 1957.
Olga’s outgoing, friendly and viva-
cious character led her to work with the
public as a clerk and as a receptionist
until she found her calling as a dental
assistant in Whitehorse. She and Os-
kar later spent time as dedicated house
parents to high school students from
isolated Yukon communities.
Although she was always a proud
Manitoban, Olga grew to love the
North, and later the Sunshine Coast
of B.C where she and Oskar settled
in 1972. She was still energetic and
worked part-time as a police-matron for
the RCMP in Sechelt.
She was a volunteer and member
of St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, vyas
active at the Sechelt Senior Centre
and was a kind and caring friend to
many in the community. Olga will be
remembered for her generous hospital-
ity. Friends and relatives from around
the world were frequent guests in her
home, a place where the coffee pot
was always ready, and an extra place
at the table was set without question.
She made friends wherever she went
with people of all ages and walks of life.
She was genuinely interested in every-
one that she met and had an incredible
memory for personal details of their
lives.
She loved to sing and to play
cards, especially bridge, and many
of her grandchildren and older great-
grandchildren learned the basics of
arithmetic while playing crib with her.
Olga cherished her family, her
friends and her lcelandic heritage.
A memorial service will be held at
St Hilda’s Anglican Church in Sechelt
on 8 October at 3 p.m. No flowers by re-
quest but donations in Olga’s name can
be made to the the lcelandic-Canadian
newspaper, Lögberg-Heimskringla,

pital Auxiliary Memorial Fund, PO Box

Stefan (Steve) Olafur Olafson
20 July 1921 - 3 September, 2005
Family and friends mourn the
passing of Stefan (Steve) Olafson. We
will miss him, and each of us will trea-
sure the special memories of his time
with us.
Steve is lovingly remembered
by his 'wife of 60 years, Dora (Ander-
son); four children, Dan (Aileen), Jan-
ice (Roger Robidoux), Colleen (Vern
children, Nicolle (Jon Vnuk), Danielle
(John Weedon), Renee (Colin Dyck),
Mike and Marc Robidoux, Eric Karr;
and four great-grandchildren, Jessica
Weedon, Jordyn Olafson, Josh Dyck,
Caner Vnuk.
Steve lived in Riverton his 84
years, and served in the Second World
War from 1943 to 1945. Trucking was
the main focus in Steve’s life, having
worked for Riverton.Transfer and later
purchasing it with his brother Harry.
After Harry’s death in 1971, Steve,
Dora, and Dan became owners. Steve
enjoyed freighting on winter roads with
Bombardiers, tractor trains and later
trucks.
Steve lived his life his way, with
hard work and great determination. We
remember with pride his understand-
ing and respect for Lake Winnipeg, his
skill at loading a truck and his efforts
to get the freight through. In his later
years he enjoyed riding his horse and
only recently sold his motorcycle.
Boats were a big part of Dad’s life
and we spent many summers cruis-
ing on Lake Winnipeg, travelling to our
cabin on the south tip of Hecla Island
and visiting many communities on the
lake. Dad also spent many hours flying
an airplane and each of us loved the
opportunity to go for a ride with him.
Steve is survived by his sisters,
Helga (George Gerrard), Esther Blais,
Viola (Jim Mark), Connie (Charlie Os-
terlag); brother-in-law Brodie Thordar-
son. He is also survived by the Ander-
son family.Oli (Mae); Beggi (Josepine),
Martin (Barbara), Kristine (Palmi
Sigvaldason), Marj Anderson, Doreen
(John Howk), Margaret Anderson (Jim
Bowman), Valdine (Anton Peterson),
Lillian (Lawrence Romaniuk); and
many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his infant
grandson, Tyler Olafson; parents, Ste-
fan and Kristin Olafson; brother Harry;
susters, Fjola Olafson and Joyce
Thordarson; mother and father-in-law,
Magnus and Rannveig Anderson; and
in-laws, Beatrice Olafson, Leo Blais,
Rose and Luke Charney, Magnus An-
derson, Harold Andersen.
Steve was proud of his lcelandic
heritage and in recent years eagerly
helped the Jon Sigurdsson Chapter
I.O.D.E. of Winnipeg promote and sell
the book Veterans of lcelandic De-
scent, World War II. He talked about
the book in many places he travelled
and he attended the lcelandic Festival
in Gimli for many summers promoting
the book. He loved to talk to people
about it.
A memorial service was held on
September 9 at Riverton Hnausa Lu-
theran Church with Pastor Trudy Tho-
rarinson officiating. In lieu of flowers,
donations in Steve’s memory can be
made to Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran
Church or a charity of your choice.
