20:00 – Opening of the Winter Lights Festival: Hotspot
in Central Reykjavík. Mayor of Reykjavík, Steinunn Valdís
Óskarsdóttir, formally opens The Winter Lights Festival on Aus-
turvöllur. Downtown Reykjavík transforms into a melting pot
intertwining various art forms featuring puppets, dance, music
sounds, giant drums, fire and shadowy figures. An exciting
interplay of lights and sound. Location: Austurvöllur.
20:15 – The Literary Landscape Excursion. The Reykjavík City
Library offers an unusual bus tour through different literary
locations in Reykjavík. Writers from Reykjavík will hitch a ride
along the way. Departure from Reykjavík City Library – Main
Library, Tryggvagata 15.
20:30 – Flower Lights on Austurvöllur. Streetlights change
into bright beautiful flowers. Location: Austurvöllur.
20:30 – Where Do We Go But Nowhere. A torchlight procession
to the pond where Reykjavík’s mayor, Steinunn Valdís Óskars-
dóttir, opens an outdoor exhibition by Stella Sigurgeirsdóttir.
Location: The Pond (Tjörnin).
20:45 – Reykjavík’s Oldest Tree. The torchlight procession
continues from The Pond up to Fógetagarðurinn where the
mayor lights a decoration of Reykjavík’s oldest tree. Location:
Fógetagarðurinn, in front of Hótel Reykjavík Centrum, Aðal-
stræti 16.
20:30 – Thursday Foreplay. Hitt Húsið offers a mixed cocktail
of progressive music - for parents as well. Location: Hitt Húsið,
Pósthússtræti 3.
20:30 – Kramhúsið’s Yearly Dance Festival at NASA. An in-
ternational culture cocktail à la Kramhúsið. Afro dances, Balkan
national dances, street-inspired funk jazz, belly dancing, Bolly-
wood and flamenco are some of the various dances on display.
Directed by dance teachers from Kramhúsið. Special guests
include French dancer Guyom and the belly dancer Sabah. The
band Pörupiltar performs. The dance floor will be open after the
show. Location: Club NASA by Austurvöllur.
20:30 – The North in the City Space. Students from the
Reykjavík School of Visual Arts connect to The Pond and the
surrounding area in an enterprising way. Location: The Pond.
20:30 – Depression in City Hall. The performance group 33b
takes over in City Hall and displays various artwork relating to
depression. Location: City Hall, Tjarnagata.
20:30 – The Pipe Organ In All Its Power. Organ players display
the greatness of the pipe organ.

– 20:30 – Beautiful Bach. Friðrik Vignir Stefánsson performs
Bach.
– 21:00 – Let Us Sing Psalms. Kári Þormar leads the crowd in
singing psalms, playing the Cathedral’s pipe organ.
– 21:30 – Distinctively Icelandic. Marteinn Hunger Friðriksson
plays Icelandic classics.
– 22:00 – Jazz For the Lord. Guðmundur Sigurðsson plays
church-inspired jazz music written for pipe organs.
– 22:30 – Turbulent toccatas. Douglas A. Brotchie plays wild
organ music by candlelight in the darkened Cathedral. Location:
The Cathedral.
20:30 – The Wealth of Eastern Iceland. Opening of an exhibi-
tion of handiwork and craftsmanship from Eastern Iceland.

21:00 – Artflow in Iðnó. Operas, readings and music – some-
thing for everyone. Location: Iðnó, Vonarstræti 3.
21:00 – Dance Theatre. Do you want to know more about dance
theatre? Dance theatre aficionados offer an evening of dance

09:00 – 12:00 – Images of the North. An International confer-
ence hosted by the Reykjavík Academy.
– 9:00 – Keynote speaker: Sherrill E. Grace – Canada and Its
Images of North.
– 10:00 – Discussion groups: Images of Individual Countries
– Globalization and Cultural Diversity – Worldviews – Visual
Culture. Location: Iðnó, Vonarstrætí 3.
10:00 – Out of the Blue! Group jogging sponsored by the Com-
munity Service Centre in Hæðagarður. Free Icelandic water is
available after the jog. Departure from the Hæðagarður Com-
munity Service Centre.
11:00 – 14:00 – Nýi Tónlistarskólinn music school offers visitors
a free chance to sing and play instruments under the guid-
ance of their teaching staff. A concert illustrating the varied
instruments and musical styles taught at the school will be
held between 12:00 and 13:00. Location: Nýi Tónlistarskólinn,
Grensásvegur 3-5.
12:00 – 19:00 – Wintertime Singing. The Reykjavík Academy of
Vocal Arts offers five short concerts by prospective graduate
students. Additionally there will be group singing, performances
of seasonal Icelandic folk songs and traditional Viki Vaki danc-
ing. Everybody is invited to join in. Location: Söngskóli í Reykja-
vík, Snorrabraut 54.
13:00 – 17:00 – Images of the North. International conference

14:00 – 17:00 – FÍH Music School. Open house: visitors can
observe lessons and listen to a variety of performances by the

15:00 & 16:30 – Ice skating lessons and exhibition. Members of
the Icelandic Ice Skating Association showcase figure skating.
After the show some of the skaters will instruct beginners in
the basics of ice skating. The skating rink will be open between
13:00 and 18:00. Admission to the building is free, but there is a
fee for participating on the ice. The fee is 400 ISK for children

15:00 – KaSa. Reykjavík Music Group 2006 will be perform-
ing Icelandic chamber music at Reykjavík City Hall. Location:

15:00 – Fantasía. A concert at the Nordic House where stu-
dents from Tónlistarskólinn í Reykjavík will perform solo pieces
as well as chamber music. Location: Nordic house, Sturlugata 5.
15:00 – Opera passages. Students from Nýi Tónlistarskólinn will
perform passages from various classic operas. Location: Nýi
Tónlistarskólinn – Grensásvegur 3-5.
17:00 – Megas at Hallgrímskirkja. Poet and songwriter Megas
performs his musical accompaniment to Hallgrímur Pétursson’s
Passíusálmar with the assistance of a children’s choir and sev-
eral other musicians. Location: Hallgrímskirkja, Skólavörðuholt.
19:00 – Vaxtabroddur – a musical feast featuring up-and-com-
ing artists and organised by Hitt Húsið. Location: Hitt Húsið
– Pósthússtræti 3-5.
20:00 – The Reykjavík Cycling Club Winter Lights Tourna-
ment. A cycling competition in Öskjuhlíð. Registration for
participants is at the club house in Nauthólsvík, 19:00 – 19:30.
Competition begins 20:00.
20:00 – 22:30 – Breiðholt Festival for Senior Citizens.
Entertainment programme at Hólabrekkuskóli, including singing
and dancing. Location: Hólabrekkuskóli, Suðurhólum 10.
21:00 – Saami-Icelandic concert. Saami singer Marit Hætta
Øverli and guitarist Klemet Anders Buljo have given the Saami
musical form Yoik a modern twist and have received great
praise for their efforts. Other performers at the concert will
include Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Sigtryggur Baldursson, Tómas
Tómasson, Steindór Andersen and Guðmundur Pétursson. Tick-
ets can be purchased in advance at the Icelandic Opera.

Saturday, February 25
09:00 – 12:30 – Images of the North. International conference
held by the Reykjavík Academy, February 24th-26th. An inter-
disciplinary conference on the images of the North. Seminars
and lectures will explore various aspects relating to the image,
identity and promotion of the North. The conference offers two
keynote speakers and twelve different seminars. The confer-
ence is open to everyone and conducted in English, except for
the panel discussion on Sunday, which will be in Icelandic.
– 9:30 – Keynote speaker: Waldemar Zacharasiewicz – The
Theory of Climate and the North in Anglophone Literatures.
– 10:30 – Seminars: Images of Certain Areas – Nature and Envi-
ronmental Issues – Visual Art. Location: Iðnó, Vonarstræti 3.
09:30 – Art Workshop of Lights and Shadow. Artists Edda
Ýr Garðarsdóttir and Halla Dögg Sigurðardóttir host an art
workshop for children. The children will play with flashlights,
overhead projectors, lights and their own shadows. Location:
Fríkirkjan, Fríkirkjuvegur 5.
10:00 – Shadowplay in West Reykjavík. All day care centres in
west Reykjavík turn off the lights and play shadow games.
10:00 – Ice Art and Ice Sports. Programme in Egilshöll for
children in Grafarvogur. Figure skating, ice hockey, old arte-
facts related to winter sports in the past. Location: Egilshöll,
Fossaleyni 1.
12:00 – Parking for the “Un-Handicapped”. Young people
from Ný-ung, youth organisation of Sjálfsbjörg Lsf. (National
Federation for Physically Disabled People) will mark specially
designated parking spaces for the “un-handicapped”. Location:
City centre.
12:00 – Multicultural Summer of Friendship. A Future Capital
project realised in cooperation with the Youth Programme of
the EU and the Frostaskjól Leisure Centre. The main aim of
the project is to promote the idea of multiculturalism among
children aged 6-12, mainly through art and games. The final
outcome of MSoF is a “Multicultural Mini-Phrasebook of
Friendship” prepared by the children involved in the project.
The exhibition is open from February 24th to March 24th. The
Service Centre is open from 8:20 – 16:15 on weekdays. Location:

13:30 – 17:00 – Images of the North. International conference

– Control Arms. A programme by Amnesty International. Join
the Million Faces petition. One individual dies every minute by
the use of small arms. Place a flower on a headstone in their
memory.
– Good Idea. Ný-ung, youth organisation of Sjálfsbjörg Lsf. (Na-
tional Federation for Physically Disabled People) will sell you an
idea, representing the reality of disabled people. Location: City

16:00 – 20:00 – Heading South. Hitt Húsið Information Centre
holds a presentation of opportunities for young people regard-
ing study, play and work at home and abroad. Location: Hitt

17:00 – 19:00 – Family First. Line dancing, choir song, live ac-
cordion music and more. Free admission. Location: Reykjavík
Swimming Hall, Barónsstígur.
18:00 – 23:00 – Images of the North. An arts exhibition in
relation with the conference. Fourteen artists display their
work. The exhibition is twofold, with an outdoor display of video
art on the corner of Austurstræti and Pósthússtræti and wall
pieces by the same artists in Hoffman Gallery at the Reykjavík
Academy, Hringbraut 121.
18:00 – Christianity, Paganism – Hallgrímskirkja and Leif
Eriksson. Exhibition in newly opened Textílkjallarinn. Location:
Lokastígur 28.
18:00 – 20:00 – Disco skating. DJs Alaska and Eden maintain
the disco fever. Admission to the building is free, but an entry
fee is required for the skating rink, 400 ISK for children and
500 ISK for adults.
