earns NSGA
sailor $75
A NSGA sailor designed a switch
that cost $75.
CTM1 James M. Ferguson was paid
that amount March 9 by Lt. Cdr.
Kenneth B. Kampen, commanding of-
ficer of the Naval Security Group
Activity, for designing a switch
that saved time, double workload,
and wasted motion.
Computerized operations at
NSGA required the use of one pa-
per-tape-reader to program either
one of the two computers. Switch-
ing from one to the other requir-
ed operators and maintenance per-
sonnel to change connections re-
sulting in the loss of operating
time and damage to the cables and
other equipment.
CTM1 Ferguson designed the
switch eliminating the need to
change the connections.

‘National Week of Concern’
proclaimed by President Nixon
President Nixon has declared this week a National Week of Concern
for prisoners of war and those missing in action in Southeast Asia.
His proclamation is supported by a joint Congressional resolution
calling for support and concern protesting the inhumane treatment of
these men and their families.
It was seven years ago this
week the first American prisoner
was captured in Vietnam. He was
the first of 372 Navy and Marine
Corps prisoners taken, and is
still in captivity.
In response to the President's
proclamation, the Secretary of
the Navy, the honorable John
Chafee, stated, "Letus pause this
week to honor them and pray for
their safe return and for the
well-being of their families." He
went on to urge all Navy and
Marine Corps commands to observe
this week with appropriate cere-
monies and activities.
The local Junior Officers' Coun-
cil has had a project at the NATO
base — Letters to Hanoi — the
local version of the National
movement to express individual
concern to the Hanoi government
for American prisoners in South-
east Asia. This project to mail
English-language letters to Hanoi
has the active support of Comman-
der Iceland Defense Force, and
the naval station's commanding
officer.
Those desiring to sign letters
or petitions are encouraged to do
so, but are cautioned to make
sure they are aware of the con-
tents. The safest way is to sign
only English-language versions,
or if the version is in Vietnam-
ese, ensure the translation con-
tains no derogatory statement
that might prove harmful to the
cause of the prisoners or their
families.
