Lt. Cdr. Bert Riggs, provost marshal and security officer of naval

What department could have aviation boatswain mates, jet engine
mechanics and reciprocating engine mechanics, yet have nothing to do
with aviation? What department could have a torpedoman play an im-
portant role and never work with a single torpedo? There are numer-
ous other rates in this department, none of which properly represent
the job to be done. The department is Security.
Under the leadership of Lt. Cdr. Bert Riggs who has the dual
of provost marshal and security officer, this department depends
on the leadership concept rather
than employing the men according
to their Navy skills.
Lt.(j.g.) Lewis E. Burnett is
the assistant security officer
as well as being a helicopter
pilot on the base's Search and
Rescue team. The department su-
pervisor is ABCS Herman J. Mrsny.
His main responsibility is to co-
ordinate all the various compo-
nents of the department into one
unit.
Tne department is divided into
three principal divisions. The
largest and best known of these
is the Security Police. Under
BMC Charles G. Matthews, this
group is further divided into
four sections working on rotating
eight hour shifts. Each section
has five or six patrolmen, one of
which remains at the desk as pet-
ty officer of the watch. The re-
mainder are on the road patrol-
ing. Aside for looking out for
traffic violators, the patrolmen
have numerous other functions.
One of their lesser known jobs
is the school patrol which is
posted aboard each school bus and
at the school crossings. During
the dark winter months, this job
is not only demanding and harsh
but of utmost importance to the
safety of the school children.
Their other duties include being
armed guards during the transfer
