tion, we pause to honor those
“brave members of our armed -
forces who have given the fi-
nal measure of devotion to our
country.
"Let us honor them as they
would wish to be honored —
by maintaining our freedom, by
striving for peace among na-
tions, by giving their descen-
dant# the opportunity for a
better life. These are the
things for which they died."

Memorial Day was started back
in 1868 by General John A. Lo-
gan. He was Commander in
Chief of the Grand Army of the
Republic. The President at
the time was Ulysses S. Grant.
The Northern Lights Branch 255
of the Fleet Reserve Association
will honor America's fighting men
who have given their lives in the
defense of freedom.
The service will be Sunday af-
ternoon at 1 in Andrews Theater.
Rear Adm. John K. Beling, ComIDF,
will be the guest speaker for the
occasion.
After the Memorial Day service
Inside the theater, the ceremony
will move outside for a 21 — gun
salute to the war dead. An a-
waiting helicopter will transport
a memorial wreath to drop in
Stakksfjordur Bay.
All defense force members are
cordially invited to attend the
ceremony at Andrews Theater, and
enjoy refreshments at the Fleet
Reserve home afterwards. There
will be free nursery service in
the station nursery courtesy of
the Fleet Reserve Association.

might continue to live in free-
dom. As we stop to recognize
their courage and duty, let us
not forget that we — the liv-
ing — also have a duty; a du-
ty to bring together all our
great and good people. From
men such as we honor on Memor-
ial Day canwe find the example
of strength and devotion to
serve that will help us meet
our duties and growing obliga-
tions. To succeed in this
task will be to insure that
our nation's honored dead shall
not have served and ■
vain."
