“Social media benefits from the power of the many. It
gives more people a voice and makes the fight more
mainstream. Instead of just the few that have the
privilege of skipping work or school and showing up
somewhere for a protest, everyone can participate in
social media activism.”
Iceland’s feminists are fighting their way
towards gender equality, one hashtag at a time.
“The road ends at Krossnes, but the oldest pool on
the list, constructed in 1938, is still further north. You
can’t drive there, so you’ll have to either hike, or take
a boat from Norðurfjörður or Bolungarvík to the
isolated Reykjafjörður nyðri.”
You have to hike or take a boat to one of the
more far-flung swimming pools of Strandir.
How dedicated are you to finding Iceland’s
most picturesque hot-pot?
“Ragnar called, and asked me, ‘Would you be in
a performance I’m going to do? And of course,
I said, ‘Yes darling! Anything you want.’ I’d do
anything for that boy! So I asked, ‘What will I be
doing?’ and he said, ‘Well. You’ll be spitting on
me.’ I said right away, ‘Okay! I’m just glad it’s not
the other way around!’ It was quite a relief.”
We spoke to Ragnar Kjartansson’s mother
Guðrún, 79, about what it’s like to spit in your
son’s face.
“Women do not direct films because they do not
get the chance to—because they don’t hear from
us that they can do it, that we will support them in
doing it, that we will fund their work equally—as
we do the work of men. Young women simply do
not know that filmmaking is an option for them.”
In the wake of the Guerilla Girls’ billboard-
sized calling out of the gender gap in
Icelandic film funding, we take a closer look
at the figures, and talk to those involved.
