such a feature) is a feasible origin for the features of
this area. This evidence in association with that of
rock glacier activity illustrates that these features may
provide an important component in the interpretation
of the glacial landforms and deposits of this, now
marginally glaciated, region.
ACKNO WLEDGEMENTS
The field work in 1985 was carried out by the Joint
Vniversity Expedition to Northern Iceland — David
Martin, Angela Gent, Tracy Brennard and Janette
Lee. The Expedition was assisted ftnancially by The
Royal Society and The Gino Watkins Memorial
Fund, Scott Polar. Elizabeth Martin gratefully
acknowledges the support of a D.E.N.I. research
studentship. The Icelandic Research Council kindly
allowed us permission to work in Skjóldalur. Mr
Hallsson and his family at Yzta-Gerði showed us
inuch hospitality dttring a cold, wet summer. We also
acknowledge Devizes School for their foresighted work
in surveying Nautadalur rock glacier, and Tony
Escritt for his assistance in providing aerial photogra-
phy of the area. Dr David Thomas provided construc-
tive comments on the drafts of this paper.
